Do Rank X Experimentations. Every time you do one of the experimentations you will either get an unstable potion, or an unstable potion, a new potion recipe, and a basic alchemical knowledge. Once you have found all the potion recipes for that rank, you will have enough knowledge to do the task that will level you up.
it took me forever to move up from level 2 to 3 in alchemy... still only level 4...
I found it MUCH faster to get the higher level experimentation since I could afford to buy the 'high level' potions off the AH. The reason is that the higher level potions are very cheap on the AH since there are so many characters at cap and people get them from praying.
You can, of course, by the required lower level potions too but these tend to be much more expensive...
And once you finally level up to 20 you get the ability to make... another unstable potion. Yay?

To get some level 20 recipes, but I guess you did not notice that experimentation unlocked other recipes as you progress...
If the task is still available there is a recipe you do not have.
L20 "Unstable Potion" is the way to unlock several potions, just like earlier ones gave recipes. Play with it some, and see what kind of interesting things you can discover.
also sometimes a levels research borks and you keep getting no research material. Just keep at it, it will eventually let you succeed. I got hbit at 8.. people have been hit form between 2 and 18. also check the research to see how many you need. You won't get any more, if you have the required amoun t.

There are plenty of good high level potions. In fact the only problem I have with the high level potions is they cost a ton of AD and time to brew. You can see more details on the Alchemy Page on the Official Wiki.

Note that once you have the amount you need to do the Alchemical Research you will no longer gain Alchemical Knowledge from experimentations.

It is very quick to level Alchemy to 20, so one big benefit of doing that is to be able to unlock the 9th profession slot (get 3 professions to 20).
