With all the buffs and such that lower targets defense is it still good to stack the armor penetration stat for a GF?
Eh, stack Armor Penetration? You should already have at least 3-4% in resistance ignored from DEX. From there, it's pretty easy to reach the 20% or so that most people recommend for PvE. (A lot of people recommend 24%, but since only epic bosses in PvE have that much DR, I have a hard time stressing over that last 4% or so. YMMV.)
So a GF only "needs" 1600-2000 ArPen for PvE. That's not a terribly high standard to achieve. It's low enough, in fact, that I wouldn't characterize that level of investment as "stacking." In any case, achieving that standard is worthwhile because ArPen is calculated before all of the debuffs that reduce the target's resistance. In other words, if you have enough ArPen to zero out the target's resistance, then any debuffs on the target put him into the negative, effectively giving you more than 100% of your potential damage.
All of that applies to PvE. In PvP? There's effectively no limit on the amount of ArPen that you might find useful. So if you're more interested in PvP, then I'd say that the answer is yes: you do want to stack ArPen.
Curious how others are reaching 20% I am at L60 and working towards Stalwart set which I don't think gives an ArPen bonus. I have rings and things but they seem to add about 133-155 for epic. Enchantments L7 are like 180.....seems like you would have to focus on ArPen to get near the 20% marker?
Thanks for the great response. I have a new pet stone that I have placed my AP stats on to get an end result so far of 1708 with rank 5's. Been using Rokuthy's guide and found it to be sound so far.Just got to learn when to hold the shield and when to run away
