I'm a new player to Neverwinter, but not MMO's in general. I'm trying to learn the in's and out's. I made myself a nice character. Great Weapon Fighter. I enjoyed the PvP, the Dungeons/Skirmishes are standard fares, and I'd like to get your input on some basic questions I have regarding my choice of traveling partners.
For example, I love my little cleric helper. I spend all my time hitting things, and the fact that she heals me is one of my happiest moments of our companionship. But I could see how added DPS would help me in PvP. I've already maxed out the cleric, and the improvement books say 'not available yet' or some such. Do you suggest I go ahead and level another companion as I'm growing (level 27 ... still plenty of dungeons to go)? Or should I stick with my little healer while I'm beating AI senseless?
I'm not fond of spending Yen ... I mean, Zen. And my wife isn't fond of me spending it either. So since leveling my cleric is out of the question (for now), and the deals I've found on the auction are above my pay grade yet, I have considered buying a dog or soldier of some sort, just to have a 15 striker companion for pvp. Or do you recommend me getting a wizard or guardian fighter instead?
I'm already in the mix, swinging the big stick. What companion would you choose to take with you?

I thought pets weren't allowed in PvP, but since I don't do it I could be mistaken.
In higher level PvE, you will find that most pets will be killed fairly quickly, including the cleric, so most pets aren't that useful later on. The exceptions to that are the cat and ioun stones.
Both the cat and ioun stones buff your own character, rather than taking healing you or doing damage. The cat is virtually impossible to kill, though can be in extreme situations from what I've heard. The ioun stones are immune to damage, so can't be killed. These make the best high end pets.
Sadly, the cat costs 980k AD at the Wondrous Bizarre. The blue ioun stone requires 2,000 zen at the cash shop.
The other pets you mention, the dog, soldier, wizard, and guardian fighter, will do less for you than the cleric you already have. You picked the best of that lot already.
If the guardian pack purchasers can sell their Dire Wolf pets, you might want to pick one of those up. They can get up to level 30 and provide good harassment of foes. However, it will still die fairly easily most likely, just not as easily as the level 15 pets.
Thank you for the reply. It's the inner workings I'm trying to learn, and most of that can only be picked up from experience. It doesn't hurt that I've already picked the right companion.
If I was to spend the zen, what about the cleric? What level can she get to, and is the 1500 or 2000 zen worth it for her?
Not sure about the pets and pvp. Haven't gone into pvp after I got my companion, not yet anyhow. Seems like something for me to confirm.

No matter what level you get your cleric to (or almost every pet) at lvl 50+ they'll be spending their time on the ground asking for help. If you were to spend Zen, you'd be better off spending that 2000 on an Ioun Stone. If you start doing end game content, you will most likely have a DC in your group, and your cleric pet will be useless. Stone is always usefull.

The 'cleric' at the zen store (The Acolyte of Kelemvor) can be useful, but probably not as useful at the high end as a cat or stone. Bear in mind that she doesn't actually heal you, just gives you a buff that reduces incoming damage, and boosts your life steal. So useful if you tend to both take a lot of damage and deal it out. As a blue-quality companion, she can go up to rank 25. (Roughtly equivalent to level 50.)
I've heard conflicting reports about the damage reduction buff. Some have said that its only on you. Other have said that it affects your entire party.
I'm not sure whether she actually has an attack as such, but even without attracting aggro, she may well end up dying due to being caught in AoEs.
As most people have already stated, the buff pets are the best companions end game. However, if you want to try out other types of companions, there is no reason not to buy some of the basic ones. They are either 2 gold or about 6k AD (on dragon anyway).
