I just turned 60 and I'm still using the dire wolf. Is this a mistake? I have the Ioun Stone of Allure but I prefer to only use it when grouping. I've been depending on the wolf to help aid as a distraction but then I have heard that some prefer to use the cleric. I guess the cleric doesn't fight but because it's healing it becomes a target? I don't know. I could really use some advice here. I don't mind leveling up a cleric if it's that much better. I have the wolf at 29 and the Ioun stone at 25. I haven't run but maybe 5 dungeons so far but before each quest turn in, I have been taking the stone out before I turn in so that I can keep them both leveling.
I Personally love my Dire Wolf. I have him on all three characters and actually dropped my cleric companion for him once I got him past the cleric's usefulness. Especially on my DC, if I can try to keep him in my AS circle and healing aoe he lasts a good long time and does do damage...With my CW as long as he's alive he keeps adds off me (not bunches but he's got a great knock down one at a time). Now...I don't have a stone or a cat because I can't afford them but it seems like, since the balancing patch, he stays alive a bit longer and does more damage so I am gearing him with blues and purples as I go.
This isn't to say in dungeons with caves and drop offs I don't (quite often) after a fight get "your companion has died you must resummon them) because her ran, or got knocked, off a cliff...but then I've got a friend with a Pheora that can FLY and it falls off cliffs to so....
All my toons each have the freebie companion you get at 16...my TR has a level 15 cleric, my DC a level...something...wizard that I never bothered to finish leveling and my CW has a level 15 tank but I use my Dire Wolf on all three (all three toons are level 60). The only other companion I am sort of leveling are my two blue skelly dogs but that's more for the novelty of it than anything else.
