Potions and Identity Scrolls are "Epic" now ???

According to the silly language used by Cryptic it seems that way...

"Neverwinter is all about venturing into the darkest dungeons and most dangerous adventure zones for epic loot. How amazing would it be to get epic loot for free?"

Sounds good...epic items for free? Of course...the economy may be hurt by free epic items, but I suppose that depends on what it is we are talking about here. Let's see:
  • Potion of Fortification x10
  • Potion of Reflexes x10
  • Potion of Lesser Healing x10
  • Portable Altar x5
  • Identify Scrolls (bound) x5
  • Lord of Waterdeep Title

Yeah...none of those are truly epic items...yet that seems to be what Cryptic thinks they are. These are items that are extremely cheap and found everywhere.

Don't get me wrong, free stuff is free stuff, not complaining about being able to get free stuff (even though I have absolutely ZERO need for it - I'll just send it to the guild bank).

My "concern" is the misleading language here. It first implies free epic loot...then it explicitly claims free epic loot. Yet, this simply is not the case.

This just reminds me of the non-existent "surprise" we were supposed to have at launch. I'm not sure who is writing or even approving the language used here for the NW marketing, but it is more than simply misleading, it's just plain false.

Get it right Cryptic! You have a decent game...you don't have to deceive your player base or new players in order to earn a few extra bucks. Just patch the bugs and bring us new content...you know...like all other successful MMO's do.

It's a promo. It's no different than any number of promos like this for other MMOs.

The rewards from the promo are listed for all to see. No one is being deceived.

You are trying to make something out of nothing.

You are confusing "existence of a promo" with the "claim of what the promo is". These are 2 entirely different things.

According to your reasoning, it would be acceptable to claim that everyone gets a free mount, but what they actually get is a ring. It's not truthful.

Or like me saying you can have a free level 60 pvp weapon, then I just send you a free green level 20 armor.

And what about that promo "loot" is epic exactly?

No, I am recognizing a mountain engineer trying to start work on a molehill.

Once again, the contents for the pack were listed. Nobody was deceived as to what they would get. You are trying to make something out of nothing by trying to suggest a marketing buzz word is supposed to be indicative of reality.

Anyone out of grade school knows that marketing is all about building things up to draw interest, and knows that whatever is built up won't be exactly all that it was built up to be.

    You are being silly.

I think that wording is still suggesting the loot at the end of the dungeon is epic, and that Neverwinter itself is free to play - 'how cool would it be to get free epic loot?' Of course, it's all just clever manipulation of words that hasn't been done by accident.

However, purple is now the new blue (at best) - if epic loot requires less than a week of levelling and then running exploits in a dungeon - then we need to start using more colours for when the REAL epic loot drops.

In previous MMORPGs I felt more proud of level 20 epics that dropped off named mobs than I do of the T2 stuff my characters currently wear.

    UPDATE: personally I like this bit of their page;

The best part about Neverwinter: it's free to play! Prepare by becoming a Hero of the North today with a Neverwinter Pack purchase!
