Some of my current performance questions and thoughts

Evening all,

Whilst the uploading of NW.3.20130529z.18 is in effect I would like to take some time to ask some questions and ponder my thoughts. (an answer from development would be nice but rather understandable if I don't get one.)

Object Rendering

I'm sure we have all noticed the field rendering differences since a recent patch, I feel that the objects are render way to late stairs for example are detailed when i am 5-7 steps away in some cases. If this was an attempt to increase performance in large areas nice try but I feel its not very effective, Is this an issue you are looking into ?

Player Effects

As for other players in my team I would like to see their effects sharpened when I say that I mean optimized to cause the least amount of frame disruption as possible, whilst still causing a nice effect. I find this to be the number one performance issue when in dungeons/group events. are tweaks like these on to to-do list ? or just not on the radar.

Render Distance
As stated in Object Rendering with certain objects it doesn't feel like the rendering distance I chose is working correctly. Do you feel this is correct ?

Frame Cap

With the games current visual performance and my hardware I will ether have amazingly smooth high rates or very low rates this large difference makes for a very unpleasant time personally(I'm very OCD about these things :D).I have tried to rectify this by using a frame rate cap 30 is way to low for me, and I would feel like a fool spending so much to have a nice PC to set 30 frames as my cap =D.so I would set it to 60fps however the cap makes my game "choke" causing worse performance stuttering then actual low frames. This is relevant when I turn the frames off in an area I had such "chocking" and my frames what to roam free at 70-80fps. I'm really not sure what you can do to improve this but its something to think about.

These are some of the current issues I am experiencing, any answers to my questions or a nod to say "this is on our to work on list " would be nice :). If not that's my 2 cents.

Performance is a real issue in NW, but it feels Cryptic doesn't care so much unless there are major crashes like the recent event in PE or maybe Gauntlgrym (hopefully).

Apart from hardware specs, some classes are clearly at an advantage compared to others. I rarely ever get any stalls with my DC but my GWF... well sometimes I can only right click and pray I won't die during a 10s stall.

I've been trying everything, every option and of course even advanced video options. Nothing works. Putting the crappiest possible video setup doesn't make it run smoother when fighting huge packs of mobs.

I think the issue is mostly collision/pathing. For instance when I use Come And Get It on my GWF it moves enemies towards me and my game always stalls for 1-3s depending on how many mobs are nearby.

Feels like Neverwinter has the exact same issue as Neverwinter Nights 2 : the graphics and engine used are not optimized and basically force machines to "outpower" display instead of using smart coding.
The early gaming experience of NWN2 was highly affected by this, and many people just gave up on it until it was finally patched. A shame if you ask me.

I'm sure PW/Cryptic have hardware manufacturers as sponsors and that they ask you to make players feel like their PC isn't up to date... but come on give us at least the right options to tweak so that our gaming experience can be at least a little bit smooth in big fights.

This game is very CPU dependant, which might be giving you your issues, especially if you have a hyper-threaded dual core i series. Please see the Tom's review in the link below. I can tell you that an i5 2500K at 4.5 GHZ has no problems running this game. another thing to look at is if your on a lower end CPU and you have a AMD/ATI card, disable physics (this is rendered on your CPU not GPU because Nvidia owns it)

Also you might want to ask your questions on www.overclock.net after you register and fill in your system specs. lots of helpfull people on that forum.

    Best of luck

Thank you for your information there xrel1x, I have a 3.6Ghz Hexcore(6 cores) So I don't think your information is relevant to me thanks all the same :).

See! I am not trying to be rude at all so please excuse me if I come of as such but I think most of the people that in their opinion the game is running fine, don't understand the more complex details of visual processing and aren't using an effective benchmark to compare what good performance is.

If you scroll down the list our CPU's are more or less neck and neck. the Intel Chip having better support (with windows systems in general)
