Has NO open world.

Everything is instanced like your standard diablo clone action rpg.

Compared to running long distances and having to kill trash mobs simply to make it to quest entrances, like a typical WOW clone?

I dont see one as being better than the other, but one of the single most quantifiable complaint today by gamers is the "colossal waste of time" complaint, which gets slapped onto anything they have to do other than what they actually want to be doing. Heck, some even complain they have to actually play the game to earn items - maybe they should just take the quests out too. :p

I DO like this game... ALOT. The open world CAN be nice, but personally I like how they did it since it reduces hardware requirements and often can improve the graphics for more players. Also cuts back on the massive coding and hardware it takes them to RUN a big open world... All for what? So the leveling experience is better?

Thinking back to overworld in WoW most players sat in the main cities/towns anyways. the ONLY reason you would run in the overworld is to PVP other factions... Which would be awesome in this game, but since there are no "factions" it would hard to have "alliance vs horde" type world PVP...

The ONLY way I could see this happening would be if pledging allegiance in gaunt would then pivot you against other players of different allegiance which allows world PVP, it would be cool (imo) but would create a TON of issues with griefing...

I prefer open world MMOs (and no WoW is not an Open World MMO), but each game should be taken and judged as it is. If you absolutely don't like a non-open MMOs then don't play one, find something more to your taste.

Personally I think this is a pretty good MMO, and I have not come across any problem that has reduced my ability to play it. But then I am old school and a slow player, of the camper/collector class. Going to do everything, no matter how long it takes me, I have another 30 - 40 years left.

NW is okay for what it is, if you want casual hack and slash with very limited gameplay. If you want a huge world to explore and kill critters along the way, I would suggest Guildwars 2 (or dust of your NWN1 CD's and try my world  (shameless plug))

    Cheers

So let's say the game did have an open world - it'd be filled with miles of barren copy-paste environments filled with trash mobs and no quests, until you get to the actual questing areas that we have now.

Personally, I really hate games that make you pay (or have to save up a large amount) just to use a mount or other mode of transport, which is basically glued to rails and you just have to sit there for like 15-20 minutes and watch as you fly some preset route. Cut out that nonsense and just take me to the areas of activity.

Stop being stupid. Just because a game is in open world doesnt mean its a WoW clone. By simple definition this games a WoW clone because it has PVP. It also clones an auction house. It also has crafting so its cloning that also.

I think this game would of been cooler if it was open world also. But as it stands right now this dev cant even get this instance type MMO right so far

GW2 was fun. If it had some real substance as far as end game, and defined classes (instead of where do I stand while I spam my rotation and measure my epeen with my deeps) I would have stuck around. Granted I am a healer player to my core. *shrug*

Reading comprehension, or lack of same, for the lose.

He did not say that he did not like the game. He said that he did not like an aspect of the game. The distinction is rather important.

    curious question.

I read somewhere that this game started out not as a MMO, but as a 4-player diablo-esque RPG? and then was converted into a MMO?

    is that true?

    Yes.

Cryptic's original intent was for NW to be a bit more like Guild Wars 1. PWE dictated the change in direction after their purchase of Cryptic.

I'm alright with the Instancing, to be honest.

if any improvement were to be made here, I'd like to eventually see all the Zones physically connected so that they can be traversed on foot. meaning I'd like to be able to leave Protector's Enclave and travel, on my Mount, to the other Zones, instead of just selecting it on the map and fast-traveling.

As above was stated, yes, it's true. It was supposed to be a multiplayer co-op.

Reading comprehension check, you rolled a 1. Critical failure.

I was using the same wording as the OP - who compared a non instanced game to being a diablo clone, so I said compared to what, an open world game like a WOW clone.

Somehow having to run to quests makes it more fun than not having to run to quests? Not to mention that having a queue system that teleports you to the quest, dungeon, skirmish etc....kind of directly contradicts having an open world.

And declaring this game a WOW clone due to PVP is just as wrong as thinking it is due to having a huge open world. Simple definition? No dice. You see..... This game wishes it was a WOW clone. 10m + subs @ 14.95 a month type WOW clone.

I don't mind the instanced zones, however the main zones have instances that are too small, only 20 players per instance is a joke heck Cryptic's other game Champions Online has 100 people per each main zone.

I liked the instanced dungeons. I feel like I'm doing something aside from roaming around the world and bobbin' field mice on the head.

Really? You throw his soul into a firey pit just because he doesn't like the game? Chill out lol. Let him express himself. People DON'T need to be positive all the time. Negativity can be constructive. You can't just turn a blind eye to the things you don't like. If you did, nothing would ever get done, and that would be double plus ungood.

I'll see your shameless plug and toss in my two cents...I play World of Greyhawk on NWN1. :) I love both THAT game AND NWO here. I really like the instanced play, the no "forced PvP"...the graphics (tho I admit the new "Event" has been locking me up when the portals close EVERY time for 15-30 seconds...and I run a reasonable system/vid card. 2.8 GHz Intel CPU dual core, nVidia GT 610 (2 GB) vid card, 6 GB DDR3 Ram...sigh). But my wife and I have been having a blast with the game itself.
