Hi, I'm Kyuubil, you may know me from such foolish titles as "Sentinels, we're going to be amazng guys!" and "I love my GWF, but she's like an abusive spouse."
Well, after spending the night slamming my face against pugs as a sentinel, failing to hold agro, failing to do damage worth noting, I've decided I just.. like my GF better, 36 now, breezed through helms hold like it was nothing, double so when I compare it to how hard of a time my GWF had.
Problem being, I enjoy tanking, but I hate turtling, I had to turtle-poke in a MD run pre-patch, pre-threatening rush, just to hold agro it worked, but it.. was boring, I rolled my GF because I heard stories of the amazing that is conqueror, and realized I could someday tank just as well with it, not because I wanted to hold shift and watch things beat my shield.
Unfortunately, general consensus seems to be "Protector is the way to go for pugs", now, given that I am well, a GWF.. I've spent too much time trying to get people to not autokick me on my GWF to attempt to fluff out my friends list, so pugs are going to be a thing, at least until I can get enough friends to not have to venture into the dark with strangers.
SO! I looked at protector, wanted to see what was so great.. and don't see the hype, the capstone -10% damage is big, 5 ac (which with armor specialization is a whole 2.65% DR! woo) -- rest is just minor block bonuses or damage bonuses for turtling, none of which should make that big of a difference.
So, in theory, I -should- be able to do so with proper changes, double so since our best dps sets are both defensive/tank sets, so it's not like i'm going to be starving for defensive stats.
What I'm thinking:
Horcy horc horc.
Standard Encounters: Lunging Strike, Enforced Threat, ?
Dailies: Villian's Menace (Damage, CC immunity and a damage buff, oh my!), Fighter's Recovery (healz111!11)
All attribute points into Str/Con (Trickshaw's post shows that -resistance ignored from dex is altogether worthless, might as well stack the hps.)
Sentinel's Bulwark/Timeless Hero/Knight Captains, SotC, ? weapon.
1.) Enhanced mark in palce of trample the fallen, 15% damage hurts, but.. a tanks gotta have agro.
2.) Threatening rush instead of Tide of Iron; DR debuff will be missed, but Marks. Agro.
3.) For my third encounter: Iron Guard (Anyone have numbers on this?) over frontline surge/into the fray -- Temp hp is nice, but bigger block meter means I can tap block to stop doomsday attacks and take a much smaller power hit, and the guard regen means that meter'll refill a lot faster, so I won't stay down in power long.
Basically play like a tank, instead of avoid, block where I can, just use iron guard/enforced threat to keep my meter topped off.
Any other suggestions for playing a aggressive tank, or should I just eye Tactician veeery carefully?

About Enhanced Mark, try tanking and holding aggro with Trample first. If it doesn't work out, then use Enhanced Mark. I haven't run a dungeon since the patch, but I would imagine a flat 35% aggro boost to all of our skills, plus having nearly permanent +15% damage if you have a good CW, would allow you to keep aggro fairly easily with the kind of damage that a Conqueror puts out. Maybe swap in Enhanced Mark on bosses, since they can't be CCed, but yeah.
Enhanced Mark wasn't that useful before the patch, either. Keep Trample up for trampling adds in boss fights.

For the record, I as a human GF switched a thing or two around to get a bit better mileage out of my skills and powers as a tank, and with a few costly rescpec experiments found out that I'm better off going 15% increased threat instead of 3% increased critchance on my heroic feats, Conqueror capstone with plate agility and shield defense to keep me alive on my paragons. I run that 10% dmg passive with enchanted mark, resulting in pretty much unbreakable threat generation even with just using my tab marking. True, trample the fallen is more damage but I've found my role and itemization veer heavily towards getting beat on a lot, so to help in the soaking of damage I just use enchanted mark for its passive threat gen.
The brutal truth of the matter is that you are going to get your face bashed in and hard, and tanking has lot to do with kiting these days - and using potions every now and then. Changed all my misc items to HP/Def/Deflect with defense slots, slotted in some radiants and sport 35k hp now with 50.5% damage reduction and 25% deflect. Going for full defensive build like this you pretty much -need- stalwart set to be able to push out the deeps and threat, stalwart set is the only thing that makes maxing your hp stat wortwhile. Sometimes I just wish I was a halfling, for then I'd be able to break 30-32% deflect easily... with even more hp.
And more hp means more dmg.
Still as a conqueror with shield defense and plate agility running enchanted mark instead of trample the fallen I can usually beat a control focused CW in damage, but people speccing and itemizing on damage (no matter what class, even dps clerics can push some mad numbers) got me beat hard. I think its on par tho, no reason for the tank to break the dps bank as long as I can have my unbreakable threat.
For encounter abilities I've began using into the fray, knights valor and enforced taunt - with into the fray and knights valor you not only soak everyones dmg and can usually have 3 or more times dmg taken than the next guy in damage taken chart you also refill your daily nigh instantly, and then you use that daily you just got to pop fighters recovery for some mad healz that are the only thing keeping you alive when facetanking 20+ mobs. I tried tanking with and without fighters recovery, and soon it was evident that its now the go-to talent when it comes to actually staying alive after getting all that aggro love. I mean, frontline surge is damage, CC and lots of AP when you wham it into a bunch of enemies but without Crushing Pin I just dont see the usefulness of it, I'd rather get even more AP and keep my friendlies alive so I can get another clutch fighters recovery off.
Anyhow, there are just my ramblings. And for sure, I'm still in the process of perfecting the playstyle, have ran but like 10 dungeons by now. Its a learning process! Also, I really need to get rid of my greater plaguefire for something actually useful and upgrade negation to perfect...
