Does this mean I dealt 35000+ damage with a single MM, or is it showing me a cumulative amount? From I have seen so far, yellow is non crit and orange is crit for damage text. However, this seems to prove that theory wrong.
Your theory is right but crits and non-crits stack on separate counters.

that's good to know as I was wondering that as well.
Given that, why display a cumulative total? I think I'd prefer to see how much damage I did with that hit, not a running total saying I did 11K total crit over the entire fight. That doesn't seem rather helpful to me

You can watch the number swing over to the total.
For example if you hit 10 times in a row for 1000 each, you would see 1000 floating off the mob into the total on the left that would climb up to 10,000.
Also normal damage is tracked separately from crits, and it seems damage over time spells are also kept in their own total (I usually have 3 hovering around my target)
