So basically, I'm looking for the fastest way to level a companion now that I've hit 60. just killing things seems painfully slow, so I'm wondering what else I can do? thanks.
This won't help you (praying will, but it will be painfully slow) but it might help others.
I quest with my lvl 15 cleric companion, and call my Direwolf when I turn in quests, thus the direwolf gets the big XP, I have him to lvl 16 already after 2 days, and my grinding has not slowed on my toon.
Also on my CW who I dont play much, I just leave him in a campfire and log onto him just to pray. my direwolf on that toon is up to lvl 6 without doing anything.

Get someone who skipped one of the higher level zones (Chasm is common) and run the quests there with that person sharing them with you so you get the quest reward.
