These need fixed/implemented/better solution put in place.
1. Need rolls need to bind the item to the character.
2. A bound item received from a need roll should have no vendor value.
3. A need roll item should be trade-able with the party members who rolled on it for a few hours after you leave the dungeon.
4. System should snap shot the gear they used to enter instance with, and snapshot whenever a purple drops, the group should see a snapshot of both of anyone rolling need.
#4 maybe excessive but should help keep players honest and transparent and isn't neverwinter's development team all about being open and forthcoming.
After some groups this last weekend, I have come to the feeling that other people are using, "if it's for my class, I NEED it" mentality and not "is it an upgrade, yes-need, no-greed". When I see a rogue gear drop that's worse than mine, I don't need it, i choose greed. Assuming other's are affording me such courtesies appears to have been a bad assumption on my part.
A necklace drops in epic pirate, it's obviously more in tune to tank as it has defense on it. I am playing a rogue. Inspecting our GWF tank, he has the exact same necklace on, so I roll need like the other rogue and cleric did. I win and the GWF flips out, calling me a ninja and saying I didn't need it and to give it to him. I'm sorry, if you already have the same item equipped, you don't NEED it, and the roll should of been greed. Not knowing the cleric or rogues intentions, I will assume they did as I did and saw he didn't need it. I can see someone trying to build an alternate gear set might say they are, but his only claim was I didn't need and to give it to him.
Later that afternoon, another group, this time 1 cleric 3 rogues and a wizard...2 icons drop, I let the cleric win the better one, and need on the lesser one. This opens a big storm amongst the group at which I point out the cleric didn't NEED 2 icons... The cleric deferred to this and the argument stopped.
There should also a consideration for what is the need for gearing up your companions. My panther received the ring and my healing companion the icon. Both replacing junk greens.
It's gotten to the point where I want to make a macro that says:
"Just to let you know, I will inspect you on purple need rolls, if you have better or equal equipped, I'm rolling need too. Also, please roll need on green or blues you want, as I will be doing the same"
or just roll need on everything, because I "NEED" it to sell for diamonds to buy gear I can use at the very least.
While my L60 rogue may get kicked for this, my L60 cleric certainly won't(well at least a lot less likely than the rogue).

I agree with what you say except people will still need items just to be HAMSTER its an MMO. the items need to be need on class specific drops is my personal opinion.
I'd just like to point out that this relatively complex looting system again fails certain basic tests (such as fairness.)
Anyway, Cryptic says changes to the loot system are coming. Let's see how bad it is before we start proposing still more changes, eh?
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev
It needs to be fixed but it's not a priority. Just need on everything if you're so bothered by it

All we can do is hope they are good changes ( because we are much less likely to see others learning the difference between need and greed) If anyone wants a fair dungeon roll there should be a rule in the beginning that says anyone who runs must hit greed on all items for their character class(es) and pass on all items that they don't have a character for. That is the only fair way unless you call items before the run but with so many unidentified items that would be tough to do in this game!
May the Good Lord keep you always in His Loving Arms

Another gripe I have is it seems like every group I have been in if you happen to be one of major damage dealers forget about getting any loot that spews on the ground. The magic user or others are far enough away to jump on items being tossed outward and some will actually stop in mid-fight to start policing all the loot they want and then will need every item that come up for a roll. Greedy player can't be fixed, but they can be ignored.
i disagree at your part of rolling a need on the icon for companion, if im to get ALL the companion and should i roll need on every piece of their gear? yes the cleric dont need the 2nd icon, therefore it should be greed by everyone, not for your companion

@Langhilau
There is a vendor that every 10 levels you should be visiting and buying new gear at lvl 10, 20, 30, 40, 50.. that will fully outfit every slot. There really is no worth in fretting over green rolls for actual character need, sub 60 blues yes, but greens no. Sure the lower levels it could be bad form and I generally just did the visual is for my class, then need, if not greed.
Perhaps your using the wrong loot option in the group setup, any greens should come up for a roll by the default loot system, so it should not matter if folks are picking up greens mid fight, you get your roll regardless... and if it really matter that much, roll need on mid fight looting. if someone complains, tell them to stop looting mid fight. @Mickwan
I didn't roll need for my companion, I only mention that it is a valid "need" for gearing your character. A properly geared companion provides equivilent to an extra gear slot on your character:
3 gear slots for ease of discussion have all the same stats each geared with 120 stat enchantment
gear 1: 150 crit, a pen, power +120 crit enchantment
gear 2: 150 crit, a pen, power +120 a pen enchantment
gear 3: 150 crit, a pen, power +120 power enchantment
Total stats:
570 crit
570 apen
570 power
Based on pets features you can have 1-3 eldritch runes,
I will use a reference of rank 5: 6% stat, rank 6:8% stat, and rank 7:8.5%
Pet with 1 8.5% eldritch rune will provide:
crit 48.45
apen 48.45
pwr 48.45
Pet with an 8.5% + 8%:
crit 94.05
apen 94.05
pwr 94.05
With all 3, the companion provides:
crit 128.25
apen 128.25
pwr 128.25
For comparison, level 60 epic pants with 77 to your 3 primary stats run 100-300k diamonds in ah... and your saying there is no "need" for gearing out your companion... In my book, gearing your companion comes before plunking out for the epic pants or shirt and that it needs serious consideration as it provides you concrete stats to your char, not to mention the extra heals or dps it gives to the companion...
But since I didn't say I "needed" for my companion, there is no point in arguing about it. I merely pointed out that gearing companions provide a reasonable "need"... should I roll need vs someone who the item would be an primary upgrade and not for their pet? I would say no. Maybe this warrants another roll option: Need Character, Need companion, Greed, Pass.
I think this all just proves the point the loot system is broken with no way to police or stop greedy players. My suggestion would position it so that only a blatant jerk who is griefing would roll need on off class gear and make it entirely unprofitable for them to do so.
