I leveled Platesmithing early in and have made very good money crafting purples and selling them, especially the Shirts and Pants. That said, I'm not sure that it would be worth it at this point. I haven't made anything to sell in awhile but I have made myself upgrades. Wearing gear that is comprised of about 1/3 gear that I've made my GS as a GF is just over 12k. I wanted more Power and the gear I've made has way more Power than anything I've been able to loot.
I suggest doing 2 things. One, check the AH for purple shirts/pants and see how they're selling currently. Two, open your Professions and in the drop down at the top, check the options that allow you to see higher skill items than you can currently create. Check those items and see what you think about them for your gear. If they're better than what you have, it's probably worth it.
I love crafting and find it relaxing. I have 5 alts that all do leadership and 2 of those do others as well. Platesmithing is 20 and Tailoring is 18. I have a friend doing LW and another doing Mailsmithing so I haven't messed with those, but my GF has 8 slots open for Professions now so once he has 2 skills at 20, I'll do one of the others next for the 9th slot.
Mailsmithing seems to be the one of the few ways for me to get gear with power stats for my cleric. Very important in my opinion.

pants and shirts seem to sell constantly. Prices vary, although I did manage to sell a a pair of green level 30 pants for just under 100k AD on the AH this weekend. The trick there seems to be having something with a buyout price be the only one there with a buyout price. That way someone who want's it 'now' will buy it.
Cosmetics vary. Not sure many folks know about that. The Tricksters armor I use as a skin one my rogue is pretty nice.
You are thinking about it wrong. Crafting takes about 5 min every 1-20 hours or so. It does not take *forever*. Click it and it runs in the background, and eventually, you will be maxed out or mid level and able to make some stuff that will sell, or not.
One reason low level gear sells is upgrade rare hourly recipes. The epic armor needs the blue armor needs the green armor needs the grey armor..... so you can sell the green and IF the recipe that uses it to make an upgrade appears someone will buyout at a higher price so they can make a blue to sell or wear, etc..... it works.
All crafting is a cash cow, if you pay attention. Its the ONLY way to get shirts and pants, and its a decent way to get blues in the mid levels (some folks will buy them to pvp) without trying to run some instance 20 times.
i've just beenfocusing on leadership myself. being able to manage it from the browser makes it easy and painless to log in every 8 hours or so and collect my take, set up a new job.
it gets easier as you open up more slots, and since there's no mats involved it requires minimal effort. i just hit 11, and the rare quests are suddenly returning upwards of a gold, or a thousand ad at a time. grab a couple green workers once you get to where you can make level 2 guys, it shortens things up considerably just because you don't have to make 4:1 at 16 hours per run.
everything the other trades make, you can probably find on the ah for a reasonable price.
