easy and convenient way to transfer currency and items between characters?

auction house comes to mind but I want to avoid tax of course

    In game mail for items. Just mail it to @Handle (obviously replace Handle whatever your Handle actually is). Can send 5 items per mail.

    For Astral Diamonds you can put up transactions in the exchange to buy Zen at a crazy rate. Then cancel them. The AD then goes into an exchange pool that you can withdraw with any characters on that server and account.

    You can mail another character items.

    You have to be lvl 15 to mail other chars on your account.
    Sadly create a new account hit lvl 4, run another instance of Neverwinter, meet your original character and switch between screens to manually transfer items.
