Formatting Character History

Running into a small problem, but I saw a player the other day with a very nicely laid out character history. Fully paragraphs, colours, bolding, the works. I'm wondering how this can be done?

Every time I attempt to even add spaces between paragraphs it doesn't show up, so I just get one giant block of text for my description.

Any help would be appreciated.

    From what I've seen, you can use HTML to some extent to format the text.
    If you are not familiar with HTML, the basics can quickly be learned in a number
    of tutorials found online.

    The list lacks tables, which are for some reason supported, but only in text format, so no border or such.
