EQ was great for what it was in its day, but.. no. Nothing like game time coming to an end and then having to fight your way out of a dungeon, wiping, grabbing backup gear out of the bank to attempt a corpse run with your group, recovering your body and then finally logging off hours later than you had originally intended. Just.. no.
I'd say yes - no MMO grabbed me like EQ - started playing in Oct 1999 and didn't stop until I couldn't justify the sub around 2006 and even then I'd occasionally stick a months subs in and revisit - started again as a casual player when it went F2P - I've tried a lot of other MMOs (WoW, Conan, DDO, Anarchy Online etc etc) and they just don't compare (for me)

Not better. Just different. Although I've never played WoW so can't compare it in that regard.

You haven't had to do that in... years. All classes get the Origin AA which sends the player back to their home town. Also when you die now you end up at your spawn with all your gear the only thing you're missing is XP. And you can summon your corpse to the Guild Lobby for a res. That game you describe, at least those aspects of it, is long gone.
EQ is way better, especially if you consider the changes that have been made to EQ. If EQ had updated modern grafics and UI it would be a serious MMO contender again.
Go to Project 1999 if you wanna play some Old School EQ

guild wars 1 , is the best by far but no people play it now so its dead first guild wars 1 and the all the rest
if a company makes another guild wars 1 with better graphics (not guild wars 2) then they will make lots of money
best combination on party-races-spells , you could make a 55 health monk and clear a whole dungeon by your self, a ranger-necro with vampire skills and go 1vs3 on pvp and win easilly, you can go just a necromancer with 10-12 pets that kills everything for you ,many combinations of builds you just need imagination and you can play any character any role you cant get bored
gear and level doesnt matter only skill , everyone has same gear. if you dont liek character you dont have to reroll you just change you change your profesion and skills /spells anytime you want
Different times so the numbers mean different things.
Old EQ at its height had just over 1 million subs which is less that WoW at it height. On the other hand at its height EQ had over 65% of the market wow has never gone above 30%. When WoW launched more people had access to pc's and the internet was far less expensive in real dollars compared to when Old EQ launched. WoW was designed for the more casual player compared to old EQ.

The current content/incarnation of both games, I could totally do without. MoP further disintegrated anything I enjoyed about world of warcraft, and EQ1s latest expansions & changes also do nothing for me. I'll go back to either to do older content, because I like the difficulty level and the way my class plays in both games @ that point. Out of the two, if I was currently choosing which to play it would be EQ1 - simply because of the horrible community wow attracts, full of bad players and just really stupid people. EQ1 to some extent still forces you to be decent at your class to get anywhere. I would go as far to say that the worst wizard in EQ1 is not nearly as bad as the worst mage in wow, so on and so forth.
Anyways, to the guy who was saying EQ1 could use an update, what I'd really salivate over is if they re-did the entire game from the start, so you still had all of the same bosses and general progression timeline & storyline except, redone and within a completely different game setup... like if this game used EQ1 abilities and altered them to be suitable for this type of pace, and had EQ1 style graphics (Not EQ2, i hate those), and there was a boss (for example) called cazic thule and a zone called plane of fear but it was completely modernized and faster paced gameplay... of course this will never happen, which is fine but if we're talking about our ideal game, that would be it for me. EQ1 redone in a modern way. I know some people will say oh play EQ2, I have... it is nothing like EQ1, the world is vastly different, the graphics don't read EQ to me at all, and the gameplay is not even related to EQ1 in my opinion, it's not an 'updated' version, it's a totally different reality.

No, Everquest topped out at 500k subs at its peak. At a time when other MMOs were lucky to reach 100,000 - 200,000 subs, that was a big deal. And that stayed true until WoW shook up everything about MMOs.

Which at the time was considered a juggernaut. Which is why I shake my head at these people who think under a million subs = dead game. Back then games did fine without 1,000,000 subs. They still do fine to this day without them.

The problem with low subs numbers is that it takes too long to make back development costs and start turning a profit, which are usually ridiculously high now compared to 15 years ago. EQ's initial development cost was just a few million, a fraction of game's like SWTOR.

sub numbers say otherwise.

I came from eq1 then moved to Eq2 but before eq2 there was Vaguard sage of heroes...the true sucessor to EQ1 imo.
I always enjoyed having to type a message to the npc's to get them to speak.
I enjoyed the crafting....nothing was off limits....
Teach your friends to speak GNOLL? lets take a boat ride......
Fippy Darkpaw and the koolaid colored elves in the commonlands.......
On Drinal( the server I am on) the area to sell was North Freeport near the sewers before there was a bazar on the moon.
Crafting food was harsh,....you could harvest halfling toes and make all kinds of meals like Spicy toelings.....
Bards with the DRUMS of Karana could move at warp speed.
Oh the days of recenlty past......much of what they did in EQ was carried over into other MMO's
