You get the first one free from a quest. Others you have to buy from the vendor or from the Zen Market.

You can have multiple companions in your active slot or your idle slots, but should not be able to summon multiple companions. If this happens it is a bug. You can buy more companions from the Companion merchant (two tabs) in the Grand Emporium or from the Zen store.

You can have multiple versions of your companion summoned but its something that occasionally happens as a glitch and usually fixes its self.

You can only summon one companion at a time.

Then he'll be able to effectively solo for approximately 3 seconds when the boss battle starts.

Actually monday after nw finally came back up, I dismissed my cat and resumoned it and a clone appeared. The funny thing was that it gave me double bonuses. When I left the enclave it disappeared though.

Must be a bug, a stone is your 1 companion.

It is a bug, I had two clerics once. I don't know how it happened though, I was running through a level 25ish zone on horse and had lost the companion and the mobs. I was at the camp and didn't see her on my screen as summoned and but button showed summon so I figured it bugged out and despawned. I spawned her again and noticed a lil later that there were two of them following me. At lower levels it is a decent boost but at later levels the companions are fairly worthless other than healing between fights.
