It's generally known by the players how the companion level system works. The difference lies in the rarity of the companion, not whether it's earned ingame or bought from the zen shop.
A Normal (White) companion's max lv is 15,
A Unique (Green) companion's max lv is 20,
A Rare (Blue) Companion's max lv is 25,
A Very Rare (Purple) companion's max lv is 30.

The OP's request for a tool-tip explaining this in game (especially in the Zen shop) is sensible.
Unless looking around on the forums for this information is meant to be one of the many srs challenges of Neverwinter?
