Which is something I've never been interested in, and thus have never done.
D&D and tabletop RPGs in general has always been a little too far on the so-called "geek" side for me, along with Cosplay and sh*t like that. Geekiest thing I've ever done is played Magic: The Gathering. for the most part, I am content to stick with the video games.
but playing Neverwinter, and hearing all the people in /nwrp talk about things that happen in their D&D games has me kinda intrigued a little bit.
Wonder if it is playable online.

It most certainly is, if everyone has the rulebooks in front of them and a proper chat client.
I'd love to get into an online PnP game, as there don't seem to be any going on among my friends/around the area.
I run online Virtual Table Top games a lot. There's a bunch of programs out there that will do this for you, and for D&D none is better than Fantasy Grounds that I have tried.
Free tools are around, I use Map Tools sometimes too but it tends to require outside stuff like websites to make character sheets which isn't a big hassle.
I played pen and paper DnD years ago, and I've played other games. If it not for one of my favorite devs getting a job here and my own DnD history, I probably would not have tried this game.
(ruffiana is the dev in question. He went by Back Alley Brawler when he worked on City of Heroes. Awesome guy)

The trick with playing D&D is you gotta do it with friends if you ask me, a lot of times if you just got out and play with random people you will get "Geeks" and by that i mean the neckbeard sort of guys, and that can make for a very awkward situation if you are more adjusted to social interaction.
Really depends though. I started playing Pathfinder at a local game store a few months ago and I went in as a complete stranger, but everyone there is super chill and fun to play with. I've had the same experience with other organized play events at cons too where you're stuck with a table of strangers to RP with and it was really fun. Never played DnD over a chat client though, but I'd totally be up for giving it a go if someone else wants to start something and needed players.

WotC runs an Encounters program, which consists of weekly sessions run at game stores across the country. That could be a decent introduction to the game, and a convenient way to play it in-person.
I've been considering joining one of those Encounters groups for a couple years but still haven't gotten to it heh. Since I don't have any friends to play seems the only option.
D&D was never big in my town,
growing up I tended mostly spend a lot of time in text adventures and so forth.
Not until grown up today, I come in contact with real D&D,
always wanted to try, but hard to find any devoted mature players.
These days, my kids and I either play with kinetic, mmos or magic the gathering cards.
So a client utilizing webcam and has D&D tools, also sort of queue system to gather
other players to play pen & paper D&D would be awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vChEPj0dXXk
I have played a few table top RPG's in my time , like a few others have said its best playing with mates from work, school around the place then hardcore players imo. I have always had the most fun having some drinks with my mates and smashing a few games out. Having said that there are some cool guys on roll20.

Lawls at dungeon *******.
I have played many table top games in person and online, and I can really say, try and find an actual group where you live. The internet is a nice fall back but does not substitute the actual enjoyment of being there with a bunch of people in the same room and living the dead ale wives watch tower experience.
i also would be up for forming a group to play online, i did some tabletop sruff many moons ago (i was 13-15 at the time, i am 26 now) so i remember ravenloft and D&D (i always got stuck being a half orc scout, and always died by trying to break into somewhere for my grp and getting caught lol, apart from 1 time a full orc cook took a shine to me and i said the wrong thing and she beat me to death with a cooking utensil, had a creative DM lol)
but ye if any of you have experience with online play (i saw a couple of websites listed on the first page) and know how many we need for a group and what outside tools we need, i would love to get a group together on skype and arrange it asap, either free or a payed site is fine by me
PM me any names so i can compile a list of who wants to play, or if you are one of the more expeience players who would be happy in guiding me and others on how to set up and get started please let me know
As I wrote, rather new to actual paper & dice part,
grown up with adventure gaming sens 70-80s.
Looking more and more into D&D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76yhnu4Kwew
I'm sure into making or finding a good client to try it out,
also stream it, to share with everyone else.
Well, an even better option and I should have mentioned it in my first response is www.meetup.com lol, NO it's not for singles!! Haha.
I just clicked on Meetups, Typed Dungeons, Told it within in 5 miles of Dallas and got back over 800 People. 189 "Old School Players group" with the next meet up on June 14th and 645 Role Players next meet up June 13th.
Its crazy cause back in the day it was ultra nerds. Fat people and people that looked like Kip Dynamite but like I mentioned in another thread Geek is Chic now. Normal people play. I went to the store and there were hot chicks buying miniatures and Dice. I was shocked. It's social, like real social not fake facebook social or MMO social.
I haven't touched the Pen & Paper since like 1989 but my kids saw it on the Big Bang Theory and wanted to play and now I'm totally getting back into it. I will say when I was a kid everyone played D&D. Like your generation probably played Pokemon. It was our Pokemon of the early 80's. That and Garbage Pale Kids lol.
It wasn;t deemed lame or stupid or nerdy til you were about 16. Then you had to separate from it if you wanted to be "Cool" lol.

But that one costs money.

D&D Encounters http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Event.aspx?x=dnd/4new/event/dndencounters
It will be full of friendly people that would be absolutely excited to introduce you to the real thing.
Careful though, If you like it you may stop playing Video Games all together!
the closest one that does D&D is 30 miles away, and I don't drive.
I'll keep exploring options.
