Ok so really this is a Hybrid FPS and RPG GUI so to make game player more fair it is REAL important to fix this.
I know of NO reason why any player would push the S button and run a direction that they cannot see. FPS gameplay like this means it the S key MUST back pedal. If I wanted to turn and run the other direction thats what the mouse look is for combined with forward W key.
As the system works right now, it gives a HUGE advantage to 'sliders' who have the advantage to slide backwards and target while doing so. As a melee class, I MUST have the ability to back peddle to break combat advantage and keep mobs in front of me. What happens now? Oh gee, I turn around and break fighting contact..... duh....
Actually, this is a common configuration for "Action MMO's" - though there are very few games currently in this genre. In fact, TERA and NWO are the only two I know of.
I play a melee myself - the TR - and while this key configuration may not be best for your personal play style, it's actually very useful and an option I wish I had in other games where it does, in fact, serve as a backpedal.
Why would someone move in a direction they can't see? Because they already know what lies in that direction, and want to keep their eyes on the fight. You can actually hold the S key and one of your At-Will clickers at the same time and do a very slow backward move as you continue to attack. I don't recommend it though; easier to dodge-roll back if you're a TR or simply juke back as it currently works & resume attacking with your left/right click once you're repositioned.
Also, I believe if you hit S while Guarding as a GF, you will in fact backpedal - but I have not played a GF due to the 2 character limitation on the account I have spent no Real Money / Zen on.

Thanks for an intelligent response. As I mentioned, there are many ways games handle it. It seems the TR has the built in roll dodge (i think what u mean), like the cleric, wizard which I know of. GF I am not sure of either, but even then if they are not blocking but swinging, they are going to be wanting to backstep to avoid the negative combat advantage as well.
GWF this control gimps us. How Cryptic handles it is up to them. They certainly could have both in game and you choose your flavor by your options. If the back peddle goes in, well you will have to do what I do now - mouse view control. Mouse control still leaves me out of the fight though -until I push the forward button again putting me at the disadvantage again.
