How to make a private chat channel?

Ok, so I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I am beyond sick of the chaotic flood that is zone chat, particularly in the Enclave. I usually play while in a party with my friends, but we're practically unable to communicate while in the Enclave due to the overwhelming amount of nonsense that people endlessly spew into chat.
I see there are chat setting, and what appears to be a way to make private channels. Unfortunately it seems to either not work or not be what it appears. I want my chat window to show nothing but game messages and party chat, yet can't seem to get it to do that. I can make chat tabs, but can't "save" them. There's only a "copy" option, which does nothing useful.
Anyways, I didn't know if it was just impossible or if I was just missing something. Help would be awesome.
