This isn't useful because there aren't many situations when I have the luxury of attacking 3 times in a row, at least not when I care about my health. If I'm mowing through things, I'd rather take Cleave.

How about making it life steal per hit? It still wouldn't be a strong pick, but it would be more useful. There have been times when I'm fighting things that I want to kite, and I might have time to turn around and hit them once but not 3 times.

I wish the utility was a bit better for it, but I like crushing surge for something else.
When equally upgraded it does more damage then cleave. I like this for tough mobs for group dungeons or other types of mobs where I don't kill em outright with encounters/dailies. I switch depending whats needed, but even if I have crushing surge equipped (which just single targets), shield can be brought up and stabbed over for group hitting.

When I need to kill quickly the very tough mobs and not control the crowd, I like starting off using Tide of Iron(optionally also starting villains menace), then using Knights Challenge and Blow through all my Griffons Wraths, ending with Anvil of Doom..then continue hammering with crushing surge. If they aren't dead by the time Anvil of doom is recharged, you might get a mighty finisher using Knights Challenge + Anvil of doom at just below the 25% marker.

The animation of crushing surge is clunky yea, the second hit doesn't even really blend with the first. An animator should give it a little workover.

I like GF, I wouldn't say there is nothing wrong with it outside the flat out bugged/broken things, but it works for me.

Something I've been playing with for dungeon running. Into the Fray + Enforced Threat + Knights Challenge, and Crushing Surge. Using Knights challenge, just smashing with crushing surge will do a pretty good sustained dps, and if you add in Fighter's recovery..you just heal yourself up every hit. Even those stabs over the shield with knights challenge will hurt, and my Guardian is mostly setup for criticals.
