Every time I look at the rare profession tasks they are the worst option of the bunch.
For example I can do :
a normal leadership task Level 2 "Guard Duty" getting 100cp, 150 normal xp and 40 leadership xp in 2h
or I can do the following
a rare leadership task level 3 " Squire at a Tournament" getting 100cp, 300 normal xp and 40 leadership xp in 4h
So the rare one takes 2x longer takes a higher level to do and gives me 1/2 the coin and leadership xp.
The task just switched and now it is
Level 3, 200cp, 75xp, 40xp for 6 hours
compared to the common task
Level 2, 100cp, 150xp, 40xp for 2 hours
So by doing the rare I would loose a total of 100cp, 375 normal xp and 80 leadership xp.
I was told the Rare leader missions have a chance to drop a rare chest when done regardless of what was listed in the mission. I think that is pure BS. Most of the common missions are indeed much better than the rare missions.

Honestly very unimpressed with the crafting system. Also not impressed with how many max level characters are out there right now.

Oh well it couldn't be that the game is in open beta and the crafting projects haven't been tweaked yet? I'm sure that isn't it.

Even if beta, this sort of things can be easily tweaked, likely just a database adjustment. At the very least, it should give equal rewards, if not more.

Oh I'm certain that is on someone's todo list. I just don't know if it is on this weeks list, or next months list, or maybe later. I'm sure they are aware of it and have it on the punch list of things to fix.

Am I missing something?
You are missing two things.
1) This only applies to Leadership, the other four professions have unique tasks for Rare missions.
2) If you were going to bed for the night, the Rare mission would be superior. Also, you cherry-picked your example, because there are plenty of Rare leadership missions that are clearly superior to their Common equivalents.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev

Yep, the crafting system is 90% ridiculously stupid right now. I'm skilling up in hopes that they one day fix it, but it's really bad.
Right now, there's 1 level 5 mission that gives 40 Leadership Xp in 1 hour. There's another that gives 80 Leadership Xp in 2 hours. Then there's another that gives 160 leadership in 6 hours. And one that gives 240 leadership xp in 8 hours. Why is that not '4 hours' and then '6 hours' at the very least, so that those 1st 2 aren't better? And both of those 1st 2 missions also give items that can be used in higher missions later. The last 2 give nothing but HAMSTER exp for the time invested, when compared to the 1st 2.

This was already explained above. The choices you gave would net, in a 8 hour period of time:
320 xp (40/1h)
320 xp (80/2h)
160 xp (160/6h)
240 xp (240/8h)
Obviously repeating the lower-level missions are better.
Now if someone is logging off (for work or sleep) and then know they will be gone over 8 hours, they would net the following in an 8 hour period of time:
40 xp (40/1h)
80 xp (80/2h)
160 xp (160/6h)
240 xp (240/8h)
Here we see the highest and longest mission gives the most since the others have wasted time where the player can't set a new mission due to being away.
Now same scenario where they are only going to be gone 6 hours and want to do more when they log back in:
40 xp (40/1h)
80 xp (80/2h)
160 xp (160/6h)
0 xp (240/8h)
They won't choose the 8 hour mission since it will cut into their play time when they log back in. Thus the 6 hour mission is the best choice.
All in all, the value of the missions verse the amount of time they take is relative to what the player's goals and availability are. The longer mission hold more value for when people log off.

Lets release an mmo, charge for it, make no more wipes, everything like a released game, but call it beta. Now, everytime something is missing (like in every mmo release), we have an excuse: hey, it's beta. But yes, everything else but the name is like a released mmo

clearly you have no experience with open beta games with cash shops, and i don't know about you but they have yet to charge me anything...that could be because its free but who knows keep walking around with all that entitlement going for you i'm sure its doing you just as much good as the rest of us

The game is as free, or as not free, as it will be once they delete the "beta" tag from the game name. I don't see what it has to do with your statement. It's free with microtransactions, the same now as when you call it "released"

This isn't an "Open Beta" this is just a scam. If it was a beta they wouldn't be making money off the game. Sure the pre-orders are ok...but selling Zen that you can use in game... Are they going to do a character wipe at the end? Open Beta is just to draw people in. It is exactly like selling something for $19.99 you'll get a lot more people to buy your product then if you priced it at $20.00. Or putting "New and Improved" on the label when the only thing that has changed is the "New and Improved" being put on the label.
I doubt very much that I'll be playing this game long. How many people are level 60 already?
Planetside 2 had an open Beta. You couldn't spend any in game currency. There where multiple character wipes during the period too. Is the game bug free at release? Nope. Is there problems like hackers. Yup. But their Beta was an actual Beta ... not a marketing exercise.

My theory is that they are, in a sense, rewarding you for "being there". In other words, those shorter tasks require you access the game every few hours in order to setup new tasks and so forth, thus acting as a timesink and also keeping you involved more.
Think about it - you can set one of the 6 or 12 hour tasks and basically forget about the game - not so if you gotta come back every hour.

There seems to be a bit of a Dead Zone in the 4-8 range in Leadership Blues. After that point you will see Blue missions for some rarer stuff such as larger volumes of cash/A.D., less common components, or higher level Chests. Its great for when you have an Alt you are currently playing and just use the Gateway to do those multi-hour missions with the inactive character. I put my main on hold for a couple of days to explore the other classes and races and by the time I logged onto it again he had two inventory bags packed with Green Chests and Barrels. I got enough of the Crafting Kits and higher level potions that I wont have to buy more for a while yet.

Oh please, are you still buying into that 'beta' HAMSTER? You can already do EVERYTHING available in the game. You can get to max level, get all the gear, you name it. You can also already buy ZEN items, pay real money for the game. And finally, there will be no wipe if the rumors are correct. So really, how exactly is this a beta any more? It's just an excuse they use to mask to release a game that is still not ready for actual release.

No you can't. You can only do everything that's implemented. Unimplemented stuff includes companion pet tomes, for instance.

Well duh....I can't fly space ships in Neverwinter either...that doesn't mean it is still in Beta. This Beta is a marketing exercise not a development beta. Not all features being implement in a MMO doesn't define it as beta since every MMO I know have a whole slew of features they want to implement.

That's what the gateway is for. You can craft from your phone/mobile device.
You don't need to log in the game.
I think one of the rare Leadership tasks is 400 Astral Diamonds in eight hours. One of the common tasks at the same level is 200 Astral Diamonds in two hours. That's if memory serves at least.
You only need to take a pass at the foundry website twice in four hours to be better off.
All in all it seems backwards. The rare not only should be more rewarding but the more time you tie up your workers the more you should get in return. Problem is this often is reversed.

Oh now it won't let me do some tasks because I'm not high enough level. Task level leadership 5. My leadership level ... 5
Forget about the stupid filtering not working at all...."Hide task above my level" (shows the task above too!) but also shows stuff really above my level

Yes well, it's more for when you won't be online for a while, like when you head off to sleep.
If so, then when is an MMO ever in beta? At all times, you can only do things that has been implemented. Period.
Beta in the games industry is all to often just an early release marketing exercise. Real Beta's do happen. They have NDAs in early stages. Latter stages, including open beta, they state there will be character wipes before release. Before F2P models you didn't pay for the subscription during beta. With F2P models now you aren't allowed to spend real money...mostly because your character would be wiped soon anyway.
How about you tell me what you think makes this a legit beta. Hell the fact that you can pay money now (I'm not talking about pre-order) for in game features is the biggest indicator that it really isn't a beta.
But back to my original post. I'm assuming there is much work to be done on the "crafting" system which is more like a Zinga *cough* "game" then an actual crafting system....oh...ok...that explains it.

I get that, but then it still doesn't make sense to give that much less.
It's backwards.
And beyond that these are often the rare tasks which are worse. I could understand if they were common...
But a rare task which gives 400 AD for 8 hours doesn't make sense compared to a common task which gives 200 in two.
It's simply backwards. The rare tasks should be more rewarding. Not the ones you put on because you're going to bed.
the crafting reminds me of the facebook games such as that chef one. where spending more time infront of the game yields more exp then if you setup a long duration and come back later.
iirc the 10m Task to give porridge would yield more exp per hour than any other task. however it comes at a cost of time in front of the game/gateway and porridge from the vendor.
Open the Launcher. Click Options near the top. Check Disable on-demand patching. This will download another couple of gigs.
For me it is clear. Whenever i go to bed i start the 18 h recruit HAMSTER missions , seeing you need 4 to get another 1. This covers my sleep + work and then i do the caravan thingy. The chest rewards(small) are ridiculous , even the mediums i didnt like. So 200 AD every 2 hours * x slots........
I understand the fact that those 8 hour ones dont reward same or more then the 4*2h ones , but some middle road would be nice , as currently a lvl 2 task is better then what i can do with lvl 3-10 tasks.

I'm merely saying that the argument that "it's not beta because you can already do everything implemented" is a really bad argument for whether it's beta, since not everything is implemented, and state of implementation has no bearing on whether it's beta anyway. (yes, I agree with you in some parts though. If this is an open beta, it's not really communicated and/or handled well at this point.)
I'll note however that NOT all beta wipes after the test, there other options available; Path of Exile didn't wipe after closed beta, they instead relegated all beta characters into legacy status, in their own realm. Likewise, they also opened cash shop in closed beta with permanent non-wiped purchases.
Separately, I'm rather sure that the similarity to facebook games is intentional, right down to the "pay to speed up" structure.
