  How do you not get it? He finishes 1st and gets garbage, finishes in the "copper subset" gets something modestly decent

  First place gets four random items but had horrible luck on the rolls. Second player gets only two random items but has great luck on the rolls...it happens.

  You should keep everything else on your experiment as constant. So, try doing the same contest with different ranking.

  I was wondering about this. I did several contests in the Whispering Caverns zone, placed in the copper bracket each time and got nothing but rank 1 items (not much incentive to participate when you're 60), but hadn't yet tested it against other areas.
