The aim for this post is to get basic feedback from developers themselves. It is a common feeling that the players / testers have no knowledge about what will improve and what won’t. More importantly what will improve over the immediately closer future, compared to a very distant one. As testers, we need to feel more in the loop in regards to what is being done about our gaming concerns. I’m sure everyone agrees if we were to see a post listing all the things the developers are aware of and working on, a time frame when we can expect to see these changes take effect and more importantly the things that developers feel don’t need to change and why.
Firstly I’m aware of the difficult tasks Devs have in relation to keeping the community happy, informed and tending to every which issue arises. It’s important that you know I understand that beta is all about this process. I am in no way trying to be malicious, however I would like to express my concern for the well-being of the future of this game. I play with a very large gaming community. We like to take a core group from beta to beta. We play some games as an entirety in a huge group but generally we report to each other how our experience has been with beta gaming and assess whether most of our gamers would enjoy a more permanent home when the game releases. We have played every major MMO beta and launch and generally stick around until it becomes apparent we are either no longer enjoying ourselves or are simply bored. Recently I have noticed a lot of these players in our group and guild who have been playing since closed beta have simply stopped logging on.. Their opinions of this game are mixed with some of my own below.
In the items listed below, these are just things I have noticed in MY gaming experience and the gaming experience of some of MY GUILD / GAMING FRIENDS. I am not representing ALL gamers, though the combined collection of ideas from my guild who have been together through the playing of many MMOs and stay in touch through forums and chat programs. My focus for this post is to hopefully gain some insight to where we are at with these issues because I am very much hoping that I can retain my interest and possibly bring back the interest of my collective gaming friends.
Some of these issues include:
Class synergy / balancing:
Something completely debated. In my personal opinion there are some fantastic aspects to the classes, however some obvious tweaking needs to take place. My level 60 classes are Control Wizard and Guardian Fighter. I have played Devoted Cleric and Trickster Rogue til the 30s and read extensively about each and every class including the Great Weapon Fighter. I have also spoken to and gamed with level 60s of each class very often.
PvP:
The changes made to each class around PvP is complete speculation in relation to whether changes should or should not happen. To speculate this is difficult for me because I feel that the classes are doing what they were designed to do, unfortunately my only opinion is that there needs to be some toning.
3 main things which comes up in every class PvP discussion, which I happen to agree on are:
1) Control Wizard do have a great amount of control time – usually enough to have you dead before you have any capability to use one of your own abilities. Possibly lower the time you are controlled or the amount of damage you receive while being controlled.
2) Trickster Rogues smoke bomb is either too much a greater area or holds you locked out for far too long – in my opinion completely debatable. I think rogues are least broken. They’re tough to defeat and DPS heavy, but so they should be. They’re also squishy.
3) Great Weapon Fighters need a damage boost. No arguments here. They’re in-affective in PvP on so many levels.
PvE:
Threat: There is a large portion of complaints based around the threat system. I’m not going to dive too deeply into these issues, though tanking is a pretty tough thing in this game. All Guardian Fighters who are successful in T2 agree that threat needs some repairing. It’s just crazy when you spec into so much extensive threat, push points in conqueror so that your DPS is large for threat and either a companion cleric or Devoted Cleric on your team pull a single heal and threat is instantly taken. I have also noticed that certain different enemies are more broken then others. I’m sure this is so that different mobs apply threat differently and to provide a different level of experience for dungeons. However, maybe toning down the threat on healers would be a major boost to a dungeon run. Playing a Devoted Cleric and speaking to many level 60 Devoted Clerics has shown me that they basically heal and kite every boss fight, due to their enormous aggro. I just wish the threat enables T2 dungeons to become less a problem. I tried the protector spec which should be the most ideal for higher end dungeons. Although the survivability is up there, the threat generation is terrible due to lack of DPS and to the way the threat system is based. From stating this I would like to know if these issues are understood and shared with the devs, but mostly if it’s on the table for change. I absolutely LOVE the Guardian Fighter and everything around it. I just think some tweaking either to the feats protector tree or the threat system or both should happen. Companions seem to have less troubles with gaining threat.
AFKers in PvP:
well is this is obvious but in fact hasn’t been repaired. I know there are full 5 man groups out there queuing for PvP and AFKing in the match. Other than full groups there are singular people completely ruining matches by standing by the campfire and doing nothing but moving slightly forward every now and again so that they don’t get kicked. It’s a real issue for me who uses PvP as a major farming AD tool (selling set pieces from glory) and believe it or not when the teams are fair I rather enjoy it.
Speaking of PvP, the system where the party leader has the ability to kick whoever they want with any regard as to a reason why is wrong. I myself have kicked AFKers, but it could be for any reason. I have gone into battles where the other players want to go AFK so they kick me when I complain. This is one of the most frustrating things I have witnessed in game. I can’t even right click and report for behaviour. Players are free to manipulate the system as they choose. Player wipes aren’t going to happen when game goes live, so what gives?
Quests: Throughout the game there are a very high number of bugged quests. I know that you guys do look into the quests. My main concern while questing and grinding is that some of the quest paths are so far wrong and the maps have so little detail or very confusing detail that it makes the questing experience not fun at all, which leaves you with using Foundry and PvP to get your XP to that level.. which is something I would prefer not to do. I’m familiar with most of the quests having 2 level 60s, and a lot of those are enjoyable but some map areas and quests need repairing so that the transition between areas and levels are completely smooth and enjoyable. My preference is to play through ALL questable content so that the storyline is connected all the way through.
Lag:
Oh boy lag. Hasn’t there been some? This is an issue that can always be expected in any beta phase. As a closed tester I have seen a huge jump in lag since the beta went open – again it’s expected. The problem with this is that I’m from Australia, and being an oceanic player playing on laggy servers = very difficult playing. I know this is something which is probably reported often, though it should be in my opinion a very high priority. Sometimes the PvP / dungeons are so bad I decide I’m not playing for that particular day.
Auctions: There has been as long as I can remember an issue with the search engine that the auctions have to offer. Most importantly, the level requirements on the search doesn’t seem to work at all. The issue is that when you need an item at level 60 and get a massive list of items below, you don’t actually get to see the items you are looking for due to the 400 item cap in each search. This is obviously a major concern which affects in the in-game economy and annoys every single player who attempts to use it, the game actually encourages the use of it and the experience playing is easier if you make the most of it. There has been no information (none that I found so don’t quote me) on the expected time frame on this repair. Having the economy broken especially AFTER all character wipes have been completed should bump this at the highest priority. Alerting players that it’s up there on the top of the to-do list should also be a priority.
Mail:
I know a lot of the mail issues have been addressed. I know off the top of my head at least 10 players who were negatively affected by the loss of AD during these issues and have not been compensated. I’m not sure how accurate these claims are, to be honest I’m confident I lost some though I was not entirely sure since I wasn’t keeping a strong enough check on what I should’ve been getting back, therefore I didn’t report this myself. Hopefully the players who still haven’t seen a return on their AD will be able to soon.
