I have not had any issues tanking anything in the game up until now. Threat was never an issue and I can still keep threat on packs of trash pretty effectively without much issue. However, when doing the end boss in Lair of the Mad Dragon I can't seem to hold threat on the boss at all.
Things to know:
- I am using the popular tank/dps hybrid build listed in the master class guide list
- I keep my mark on the target 100% of the time and it rarely falls off early from taking a direct hit
- When mark fades at (what seems like) random intervals even if I am not hit, I reapply it within a second
- The only thing I have not tried is using my 1-on-1 lock-on ability to see if it can help in my situation
- My overall gear score is 12,000 (just in case anyone wanted to know)
- I have used the suggested abilities in the guide
- I have played around with lots of encounter and at-will variations to see if it would help
- I avoid all avoidable damage humanly possible. The only time anything hits me is if I get locked in place for any reason and have a few red circles formed under me, but it is rare that this ever happens in an attempt.
- I make liberal use of stab to help hold threat (since it says it is a taunt) and use tide of iron to keep the debuff up and to rebuild guard.
- I stupidly started gearing for pure defense but quickly realized this was a bad idea and am now gearing for more damage. I currently have 3/4 pieces of the stalwart set and am working on getting the helmet to help increase my overall damage.
No matter what I do I cannot hold threat off our rogue on this particular boss encounter. He is doing around 8mill damage on average and my damage is around the 4mill mark because I am working on re-gearing for more damage and it is a process.
Can anyone help me think of why I can't hold threat on this particular boss? Trash still locks on to me a good bit and other bosses are not nearly as bad. Is it just because my damage is low from gearing for pure defense? If so, that is good because I am fixing that problem.
Any advice/suggestions are welcome. I am really hoping to fix this problem so I can better help my group.
We have tried just letting the rogue tank the boss while I help on adds, but that works 100% worse than me trying to keep threat off the rogue.
Tonight we almost killed the boss but failed at the last second due to me not able to hold threat on the boss so he could be positioned better while the group kills the mini boss and his wave of healers. Even when I tanked that group it still didn't work out because of the bosses abilities going every which way.

Is anyone else having similar experiences or have any suggestions?

Just checking back in. Hopefully the forum day shift is more lively than the graveyard shift.
I am having the same exact problem. Guardians (especially at lower levels) cant hold aggro for s#$%. The other problem is teammates don't wait for you to gain aggro first (which is their problem then imo).
