Alignment System?

Hi there I'd like to start by saying, I'm a long time fan of D&D and well not an incredibly huge fan of MMO's and when I found this game I was shocked by how awesome of a game you've made here. From a bit of play, I'd like to share an idea I have for the game.

In Dungeons and Dragons, the game is really about being another character and so it's not really all that black and white - or at least the more interesting characters aren't, I'm sure we're all familiar with the alignments, (Neutral, Good, Lawful good, Chaotic good, Evil, Etc..) and I think that a big essence of the D&D world and experience is that it's a world of villains, people and heroes. Sure that's reflected in PVE quests but I think it's kind of.. Stale to just play the hero.

So why not introduce alignments into the game? Say give the player the option of picking one from the start, maybe just a simple pool of Good and Bad. Still spruces up things a lot. And opposed to fighting for Neverwinter, you fight against it - from the start you help the Nashers rebel maybe raid caravans. Maybe instead of beating the Black Daggers you get quests from them. Then when you choose to either do a good deed or a bad deed you get an alignment point or something and you could create a new currency with these (As I see you devs love making new currencies.) So you could spend those points, maybe spend Good points and get a Neverwinter guard cape and maybe bad points and get like a Nasher rebel companion or an eye patch.

It may be too difficult to implement, and require you revising a lot of your material thus far - but I think it would make this game which is beautiful and a diamond in the rough into something a lot more interesting. You've got great potential, alignment system or not, hope this gets read by the right people and would be happy to hear the communities thoughts.
(I don't mean a Horde vs Alliance deal, I mean a more PVE roleplay thing. But I guess it could be used in Group Dungeons and to organise PVP.)

I am an old D&D Player (Since 1st Edition - I used to play with Gary's son, Ernie Gygax) and I love Neverwinter, but I don't know how they could implement a complex nine-part alignment system within the context of an MMO without making a convoluted series of alignment related quests.
    What? Me worry?

They streamlined the alignment system in 4E. I'm not off hand recalling exactly the differences but, essentially, it went something like, Good, Evil, Neutral with many of the permutations (Chaotic Good/Evil, Neutral Good/Evil an so on) having sort of gone by the wayside. In fact, I think Neutral got changed to Unaligned.

I checked my 4E Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide and the alignments I saw were Good, Lawful Good, Evil, Chaotic Evil and Unaligned. However, even with a drop from nine to five alignments, it would still probably be prohibitively difficult and time consuming to attempt to implement an alignment system in an MMO. It can be done to a certain extent in a single player game but an MMO ... probably not.

Well I wasn't thinking nine part, maybe just two or three. Certainly a dumbed down version but something that could add a bit more character to the game. I find that it's got great story and great potential for story, but it's lacking this grey area.

And while it's time consuming, and difficult to implement in a multi-player game it'd do well in the PVE missions. Make you really into your character.

Yeah, I know what you mean ... despite the fact that I always play Neutral Good and dagnabbit, they done robbed me ( ;) ) ... I think you have a very good point but ... still likely not terribly doable, at least, not at the moment.

The alignment system went away with D&D 4th Edition.
