Buff/Heal Canceling attacks (PvE)

So there are various Mobs who have the ability to remove Buffs and with it - heals. For example, the Drider.

So my question: If it does do the attack through my AS without hitting anyone, does it remove it? If it hits me, its removing it im sure. What about hitting *someone* inside the circle? Anything else I should be aware of?
As of now, it seems like that oppinions are quite different on how it works ..

    If the certain attack type (the purple ball as far as i know) goes through center of AS it gets cancelled, thats the only times it has been cancelled for me

    Wait until you get to the Temple of the Spider or what it was called :)

    Need to investigate these mechanics ..
