How good is Armor Pen on Control Wizards? Anyone have any thoughts on it?
If we assume that almost every mob in the game has some kind of armor mitigation, especially the harder ones, then would it not make sense to prioritize armor pen along with the level of power? It might benefit damage over time tick powers like Conduit of Ice more than say nukes like Chill Strike and Sudden Storm.
Could the best setup for damage be a healthy balance between Armor Pen, Power and Critical Strike?
I did a armor pen stacking build and to be honest, I really did not notice a big difference on boss mobs.
In PvP and on trash mobs though, there was a significant damage increase, On trash mobs I went from hitting for 200 to 300 with Icy ray and my criticals were significantly higher (went from 1800 to 2400 on Icy ray crits). I felt I gave up a lot of other stats pushing my armor pen but it may be worth it when people start figuring how to min max discovered gear.
I may not be considered by most the BEST PVP Warlock on the server but, I am the most HATED amongst them.
I realize this isn't really the same thing, but it might be worth exploration (and apparently I cannot yet post threads to give this the full discussion that it needs).
When I'm in groups I often run a Tab-Ray of Enfeeblement.
Of note, the spell says that if you hit the same target, the debuff doubles. That's an ENORMOUS gain in dps for yourself, and the group. So I use it. Even the DoT aspect is pretty hefty and can kill some minions just on it's own.
But...at least against trash mobs, I don't really notice the second enfeeble improving the damage of my Magic Missile. So I'm wondering if mobs are just running like 15-20% mitigation, and the extra Ray is wasted on them, or whether it's broken or what.
Relevancy to your topic: If you wanted to gear for A.Pen, perhaps look, at least temporarily, at a cap of about 15-20%? Or run Ray and don't worry about as much A.Pen?

Interesting point there dematto. Trash level adds could very well be running much less armor, however on the same note, I remember reading somewhere that the 2nd ray of enfeeblement was bugged and wasn't giving double debuff but rather only a very minor increase after the first. Your observation of it working on bosses though might prove that wrong and lends to your theory of lesser armor on adds. I have no idea.

Sometimes when you damage a mob there is a damage number and a number in parentheses. I'm assuming that the number in parentheses is how much damage you would've done if you had more Armor Penetration. I could be wrong, but I'm entirely unsure what else those numbers mean.

I tested TAB RoE on the target dummies which have zero armour mitigation. The first cast boosts damage by 25% and the second gives you a total of +50% damage bonus. Using gear with armour pen has zero effect on damage vs target dummies (either spell or melee).
From what I can see the armour pen stat will reduce mob mitigation (if they have any) while spells like RoE simply boost damage by X%. It is possible that RoE will negate mitigation if the mob has mitigation (rendering armour pen useless in that case), or it may just be a bonus damage buff.
