Dear PW: You must institute class specific need rolls or allow any group member to initiate a kick. I was in a Cloak Tower group where every drop was needed by a GWF named <name removed>. The blue drops couldn't be used by a GWF. We told him after the first ninja that he needed on gear he couldn't use and he never responded. The leader did not kick him. I understand all gear drops are BOE and can be sold on the AH so there is an incentive for this kind of behavior. It must stop.
i think i was with you.. that guy was a dwarf right? bumped into him a few times in the last few days and he does the same. regardless of class restrictions or whatever it happens to be.
I'm very on board with this. Even with green universal drops (crafting materials/accessories) I've seen people just /need on everything. I completely agree that players should be restricted to being able to only need on class specific gear, but we need some sort of system for the universal items.
Perhaps some sort of warning system, or an auto kick after excessive need rolls. As an example; Player Bob is being a butt and need rolls on everything in sight. Crafting materials, belts, rings, armor that he can't use. All of it. Would it be possible to write code to detect what sort of items Bob is needing on, and determine from that information how many items out of said data pool are not usable by Bob's class, and enact a temporary suspension of his ability to hit need on anything beyond his own class specific items?
Now, I can see "Well what if something he really -does- need drops and now he can't roll on it?" coming up, but the other side of that is Bob decided to be greedy and essentially steal from his group mates. If greedy Bob wants to play like that, then the punishment is deserved at that point. It's Bob's own fault for now missing out on gear that would actually have been useful to him.
It's just an idea, after all, and I'm sure PWE has their own ideas on how to resolve the issue .

What if the blue piece that drops is not an upgrade for anyone?
I bet you "need" on everything that's for your class regardless of whether or not you actually need it. I think THIS is a bigger issue than needing on off-class items.
My opinion is that they need to remove the need/greed buttons and replace them with "roll / pass".
If you want an item roll for it. If you don't get it, too f-ing bad. Trade for it or buy it. Everyone worked for the items everyone should have equal right to loot whatever drops. Just because it has your class' name on it doesn't make it yours.
I know my opinion is controversial but it's my opinion. I'm an 11 year EQ verteran and never once complained about some wizard getting a raid drop that I needed for my cleric. He won the **** thing fair and square. I would ask to trade or if he'd let me buy it. If he said no, I chalked it up to bad luck and raided until I got it for myself.
What I didn't do was go on the internet and cry about it.

To be honest, I'm leaning this way as well. I've been playing MMO's since UO online and while I understand where the N/G/P system came from and why, I tend to think it really should be a pass/roll system as well.
With Pugs in particular, I really pay little attention to anything other than blues and if I can't use it I'll pass, if it's a class item I need. But do I get bent out of shape is someone who can't uses it needs and gets the thing? To be honest, I don't pay that much attention. Hell I'm usually surprised if anything ends up in my back pack.
If I'm in a group specifically to look for gear that's different, but then either I've formed the group or am playing with friends/guild mates and we all know what we're there for.
