"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev
You do not need training. At level 10 just hit the "N" key to bring up the Crafting Menu. There are Skill Trees to Craft Armour for each Class and a Universal Discipline called "Leadership" that gives Silver, A.D., and Exp. as rewards.
'Wen considered the nature of time and understood that the universe is, instant by instant, recreated anew. Therefore, he understood, there is in truth no past, only a memory of the past. Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. Therefore, he said, the only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it.' Terry Pratchet The Thief Of Time
But can you make anything? I've been working on the beginning parts to get the materials but have yet to see "use A and B and make C" Does the crafting Menu boil down to actually making anything?

Yes you can eventually make Purple Gear. Goto http://gateway.playneverwinter.com and log in. You can take your time to check out the Professions area, and work those skills up while at work or wherever.

You can make pants and shirts for the appropriate class (eg., tailoring makes cloth for wizards)
You can make armor items (boots, armor, gauntlets, headpieces) for classes (mail smithing for gwf and cleric).
pants and shirts are very useful, the initial ones have like +9 power.
as you get more and more experiences you can make green and blue items. and the rare blues with slots for enhancements. Those aren't easy to, they require high quality materials.
Materials drop, and can be found in skill checks (boxes that require dungeoneerng, religion, thievery etc to open)
You do end up making things, it generally starts around level 3 or 4 of the profession.
With the exception of Leadership, that is just for character XP, money, AD and loot boxes.
You can make stuff at Profession level 1. So I'm not sure why he's confused.

Have to recruit your first person asset to move from 0 to 1. Some resources and assets can be bought from the profession vendor.

Is it just me or does the scaling of progression seem a little off. Does this get better at higher levels? A lot of the recipes up to 4th level smithing seem to be "side-grades" to what is already dropping in the quests that are appropriate level to the gear's minimum requirement.
In Leadership at level 4, I'll get options to run a "Rare Blue" to earn 400 AD & 40 Profession xp that takes 8 hours.
Or I can run a level 4, normal/white/common quest that earns 200 AD, 40 profession xp, 100 copper & 75 class xp that only takes 2 hours.
Within 4 hours the normal run outpaces the Blue easily. Is this by design for players with limited online access?
And what's the story supposed to be explaining temporary recipes in the 1st place. Did my miner have a divine revelation on how to make blue gauntlets that he's going to forget an hour later?

Assuming that you're level 10+
