Serious question. It's the same question posed to SW:TOR players when they found out it was a rehashed WoW clone.
With the foundry being nerfed, and only dropping a few items per run now, and the EXP probably being nerfed as well, the only fun part of the game is gone.
PvP is -strictly- gear based, nothing more, nothing less.
PvE is just 5 man dungeons, and poorly made quests (albeit, better than TERA's quests).
If D&D wasn't in the name, would you think lesser of it? I thought about this and it pretty much made me rethink playing this game period.
I'd treat it like any other PWE mmo if it wasn't D&D. Fun for a little while, annoying at end game.
It's the RP that interests me. Making and being a character. Don't give a **** about gear score or PvP nonsense. My friends and I simply enjoy delving. D&D is the only thing that really has RP anymore. Everything else has gone the way of post-BC WoW.
So yeah, if it didn't have the D&D theme, I wouldn't be playing it.
Dungeons are my favorite part so it isn't ruined for me. I wish there were some true mega dungeons though that were randomized & took 4+ hours to fully clear (Not meant to be cleared, clues give hints to where the boss is) but I can only dream of a true dungeon crawl experience.
As for your question, it was Neverwinter being in the title that drew me in more than D&D. That said, without those I would most likely have never given it another thought.
Id probably still play it because outside of the lore, this game really has nothing to do with "real" D&D. In the long run, it's an MMORPG just like any other.
I don't know. I am pretty die-hard when it comes to franchises I like. But on occasions I will try something new.
I am too. I love D&D.
The problem is that they're milking people like us with these titles. I fell for SW:TOR as well, because, well, star wars. In the end the only thing semi innovative about that game was the space combat >.<. Still leveled 3 chars to max because... well... star wars.

this is interesting to me. are you saying that the brand will bring in RPers and that's what will keep you? because, essentially, couldn't RP be the reason you stay in any mmo?

I like how the combat plays. That's why I'm here.
I'm a fan of D&D 4E, but I don't really care that Neverwinter is D&D, or nominally based on 4E.
No, I would likely not have noticed the game. I do hope that they build on the D&D model to give a much greater range of customization and options. This latest change to the foundry appears to be a giant step away from that.
The right to command is earned through duty, the privilege of rank is service.
Actually the name "Dungeons & Dragons" was a tiny bit of a turn off at first. Mainly because:
1) DDO was such a bad game that the first thing I asked my friend was: "Is Neverwinter by the same people who did DDO? NO!!! Awesome! Where do I sign up?"
2) Neverwinter Nights is one of my most favorite 3D RPGs back when I was in college! To think I could explore that world all over again in a next-gen MMO like this game was like a dream come true! I never really cared that Neverwinter Nights was a "D&D" game.
3) I was scared the game would have too many D&D dice stats, like what DDO had and any old D&D RPG from the past. It's not a bad system, but it's not very convenient for a PC game! A weapon doesn't need to say "Damage: 3D6"! It should just say: "Damage: 3 to 18" !!!!!! It's not cause I'm bad at math! It's just because at some point, I will be playing the MMO for several months to a year, I will get a bit "lazier" at times and the last thing I wanna do is struggle to find out the total damage output of a weapon multiplying dice numbers when the developers could of just written the actual damage numbers! Agan, that was another question I asked my friend before deciding to play. I asked him: "Does Neverwinter use that old annoying D-number system for weapon stats and HAMSTER?" He said "no"

I have no interest in the PvP. Gear based PvP is pretty stupid imho. The highest lvl team has the best gear and skills. Battle is over before you begin. My only current interest is the PvE and single player campaign. The professions are a nice twist on the WoW material farming (you can still farm, but now you don't have to).
The purpose of the Foundry is to keep the game new and interesting in the end game, not to lvl. Those players that used it to lvl to 60 pretty much killed their own gaming experience. Quite frankly a lvl 60 running around the graveyard would get boring fast. Everything would die as soon as you spot it. There is no challenge at that point and those players will leave to find a different game they can power lvl and get bored with.

I would't quite include me. I do not have any expectations as to what the game will be. I has been 10ish years since I last played Neverwinter. I have only MWO for MMO reference and that is not an MMO as I have been told. If a Breath of Fire game came out tomorrow I would buy it on the franchise alone.:o
Heck I bought Reckonning Because of RA Salvaore & Todd MacFarlane were involved!

I kinda wish I used that exploit TBH.
I leveled to 60 on my TR through nothing but questing.
I'd rather NOT do that again. It was... somewhat enjoyable... the first time. Won't be at all the second time. I agree that if it is their first character, then it will ruin the game.
But now you can't even do LEGIT foundrys to level up, which makes it so I will never level an alt, ever. There is no variation in the quests, and that completely kills any chance for leveling alts.

I don't really care about the D & D franchise at all.
And even though I enjoyed playing Eye of the Beholder on my Amiga, the impact on my decision to play Neverwinter is zero.
