Can you kill steal in this game or is it who ever hits get full credit? I want to jump in and help people but don't want to be "that guy" who takes their kill.
I briefly pondered that earlier today as I was running round putting HoTs on people so they didn't have to hunt down a campfire and could continue blowing mobs up. I like the laid back attitude towards XP, its a bar and that is it. I even vaguely queried a friend as to if we were getting XP from quests only or if mobs were counting also until I came to my senses. I only just found you could mouse over the bar for exact numbers, after I found this post. I haven't tried to figured out how much you get per kill, nor do I want to. I came to the conclusion that I was really enjoying not having XP numbers thrown in your face every kill.
So my advice would be.. if someone gets snarky at you for tagging a mob near them.. just tell them they get full credit, and move on quickly. They probably won't know how much XP they are supposed to be getting for a solo kill anyway..

I wondered this too, especially when I'm running through a field and a person is there fighting a group of mobs and dying. I'm a cleric and my first instinct is to run by and ninja heal them, just to help them out, being squishy by class I can understand that terrible feeling when you get overwhelmed and you start worrying about loosing your exp and loot from dying. I learned quickly the heal aggro in this game is.... special... to say the least and I always end up running off with their mobs. So I stop and have to kill off the new adds and I feel bad because I see my exp bar jump.
I don't ninja heal in the field anymore unless the person isn't currently engaged in a fight.
I was that person

Would like a word from devs or quote on this topic. Is it like gw2 where everyone that touches the mob(s) get credit or what? lol

Well i can say for a fact that if its to count towards another players kill count in a quest that you can go ahead and help them. Only as-long as they have touched the mob. They will get a count towards killing said mob as well as they do get loot even if you kill the mob for them.
Don't worry everyone who participates in the fight with a certain monster even if that means dealing 1 points of dmg to it gets full credit and separate loot as well. I don't know if healing someone counts as "participation" though.

thank you for the clear answer, didn't much like the "who cares just lie to people" answer lol
I jump in when it looks like somebody's running away. I mispull or get adds quite often, and run away. Mobs seem to be on very long leashes, but if you drag them to guards they will kill some of them. You apparently get credit and drops if you damaged any one of them, and even if a guard kills it. You may not get quest credit though.
Very good questions and answers. Coming from GW2 I was wondering if the same applies here. So many other MMO's make it depended on either who deals the most damage or who deals the first strike. It would be nice if one can just jump in to save someone in distress who is a little overwhelmed without stealing some of the dps or drops. And, of course have the same done to me if I am in that situation.
Mobs are bloody fast on their feet or hooves or other.. and I wish I could move while dealing damage but loving the game so far.
If it's credit towards a mission, at least getting some damage in still should net the attacker credit for the mission. I think (this is how it looks to me, but I could be wrong) XP and money from the kill is pro-rated on how much damage you did to the mob. I know I've helped people on CO and never had anybody complain about kill-stealing. And myself, I don't mind it either, except for times when I'm playing melee and closing in to attack a mob for a mission and some ranged hero blasts him before I can. I think one big reason why kill-stealing isn't a big deal on CO is because trying to level on mobs alone is a helluva grind. Mission XP is your bread and butter for leveling.
So far, my experience on NW leds me to believe that the above stands true for NW. Don't worry about mob XP, look to quest XP for leveling.

I've not played CO, but I've seen people complain about KSing of some form in just about every game I have played. For example I got griped out in WoW because I was "KSing" someone else's target. Had to point out to them that whoever tags it first gets credit, and he was technically trying to KS me. I've even seen complaints towards others in GW2 where you can't really KS at all.
I wish they would officially state how tagging and XP works in Neverwinter so we don't have to assume or guess.

If brute force didn't work, you didn't use enough brute force!

I don't think there is Kill Stealing in Neverwinter. I know there is not in STO (another Cryptic game). As long as you lay hands on the mob, you get some form of credit. I know in another SciFi MMO I dabble with, It is the first to damage that gets credit. I know this because when you target a baddie, the target reticule is red but, if another player deals damage first, the reticule turns grey. You can still do damage but, they get the credit for the kill.
It's not the XP - it's the dropped loot. Whoever gets the final kill gets the loot drops. As a Cleric I just Seal and Heal and observe unless it's a nasty grunt, then I might throw a couple attacks, but I always try to make sure the original party get the kill.

Since the original D&D is all about cooperation, it would be terrible to hear you can kill-steal and get away with it...
From experience, I think I've always gotten something when I join the fight, and I think I've seen the other player running around to collect dropped loot.

I don't think this is the case. I will often toss an AoE swing into a group of mobs someone is fighting, generally not killing them, and I still get equipment. I think doing any damage can get you equipment drops, while not affecting the other persons loot at all. Always see them scooping up invisible loot.
I am getting tired of the rogues running around, interrupting my fun of playing this game, just because their class is OP and does not take much skill to be played, it doesn't give them a free ticket to take away other peoples (tanks) fun of fighting multiple targets at once. This happens quite frequently, almost daily. Usually some random rogue (a very common example name would be something like) "insertnamehere93" in which the 93 represents the IQ not date of birth of that player. running around feeling pro due to design flaws and literally stealing other players fun. It is a bad thing and should not be left aside without further consequences to the killstealing/mob inerrupting person.
It is just a sign of disrespect, to "jump in" without being asked to and seems brainless to me. Some people like to grind mobs it does not give anybody the right to ruin their gaming experience, period.
(in fact, killstealing is the only reason for me to put somebody on my ignore list)
While you see brainlessnes, I see politeness.
When I see someone struggling, which I've especially seen in the Tower District where people accidentally pull the ogre by the Merchant Hall, I run in and help. I don't want any XP or loot out of it. I will often leave the drops, hoping that they'll eventually appear to the person I helped.
Ultimately, I think it's better to help so that person isn't stuck waiting at the campfire for 15 minutes to heal an injury or spend hard earned money on kits.

Okay - that could be the case. It just appeared that way to me. But I also know the aggravation when you're having fun doing a work-over on a mob and someone comes in and kind of steals the thunder, so to speak. My Cleric character will just observe and throw heals out.

Actually you do in pvp. If you take the last hit of a player then he dies giving you the points and kill. This may result in you coming first instead of them which will then proceed with you getting a blue item for your pvp efforts where they rage.
