Click on "new character" and it'll ask you which server you want your new character to be on.

You can change shards but you must make a character specifially for the shard.
Shards are simply temporary "servers" for the game to support the high launch load.
Over time they will be reduced into a single shard so in the long run you won't have to even think about it. That's why there isn't and won't be a means to switch characters from shard to shard.
I'd like to know this as well. Selected the wrong one by mistake (friend is on a diff one).
Edit: Same time response. Nice! lol Thanks

Is this single "Shard" going to be able to handle the 30,000 players you have now? or are you honestly expecting to run them all off so you can drop it to only one server?

The issues today were caused from the login queue which will be fixed tomorrow morning.
The shards are able to handle loads much higher than 30K players.
What's the expected timeline for getting the shards combined?
- LTS since shortly before the F2P announcement, and very happy about it.

There is none.
Multiple shards exist on an as needed basis. In theory they could add more in the future after a big update if they deem it necessary to support higher loads.
They're called shards because each "shard" is actually a network of hundreds of different servers.
Learn something new every day, eh? Haha.
They're more like realms, but you call them 'shards'

Imagine the player base as a spherical gem. If you take a hammer and smash it then the pieces are different shards.
That's the best analogy I can use for the term shards. Because unlike realms or worlds, shards are a piece of a whole. You can put them back together and that is of course the plan.
Besides worlds is too often synonymous with server.
Which Shard is for EU? , I'm looking for the shard with the least LAG and the smallest Latency .. I don't want to play on USA or ASIA and press one button now and wait 1 seconds for my character to do anything.

Servers work the same way. Imagine Server is a whole shard, and realms/worlds are like pieces of that shard. Anyways its just old mmos go by Servers, Realms, Worlds and what not, and this game is using 'Shards'

They are all equal. There is no shard for a specific location.
Each shard is a network of hundreds of servers around the world.
Servers work the same way. Imagine Server is a whole shard, and realms/worlds are like pieces of that shard. Anyways its just old mmos go by Servers, Realms, Worlds and what not, and this game is using 'Shards'
Right and wrong. When you join a server on most every other MMO it's a single server. The shards are hundreds of servers.

Nothing wrong with the shard system. Just make sure that you choose the same shard as your friends/guild. They will merge them as needed to keep the population high and active.
Can you add a way for player's to change the shard with zen or 1 free for new players? or may be make a system that tracks player's activity and dicedes if we need a shard change. for an example if we are playing on one shard with a friend but we have other characters on the other? Or can you just make a way so that we could trade in between shards? This could be more like a GM ticket for extra planar transfer. could still be in the mail box, only GM would have to be on to do the tranfer (please note: I am not familiar with server things. I do not really know how it works and if you have to stop sv to transfer the data.) also this could cost diamonds.
my problem is that I made a DC, now lvl12, on Mindflayer, but then with a friend, we made other chars on Dragon, now lvl 16 with low skill professions and 5k diamonds, and I thought that it would not be a problem, since I did not know how the Shard system works. And know my friend tells me that he has another friend that is about 25lvl somewhere.
So, can you add something somehow somewhere so we can either transfer items, or chars. may be on site? And the transfer could cost some diamonds?

As I said, this is a temporary state thus there will not be any way to change shards.
It's a short-term nuisance.
Thank you for the quick reply.
Honestly I prefer this method if it means no or less lag and no waiting in line to play a little.

I refuse to call them shards. They're servers regardless of whatever technical jargon you want to throw at me. Just like "open beta" is a launch to me. I'm tired of companies putting linguistic spins on things trying to give us the illusion of one thing when it still feels like the other thing. But I digress.
I really don't care if each server has a huge capacity. Protector's Enclave zone chat is unreadable. Merging servers will only exacerbate that. What about characters with the same name? Is there going to be forced name changes? Is the game's population really that unhealthy that it's time for server merges?? I'd like to hope that it's not.

Character names are not unique anyway. The PE zone spam can be fixed by simply creating LFG and Trade channels. Anyone using Zone after those are added will constantly find themselves chat banned by other players. The planned merge has nothing to do with population being at unhealthy levels. It was planned before the game even went into open beta.
I do agree on the silliness of the semantics with shards/servers though. Different games call them different things. And almost all of them have more than one actual "server" per the game world/shard/realm that players call "servers". Not really an issue though, just silly to argue about either way.

You were in another thread trying to tell me this same thing. You're wrong. Character names are unique.
No they are not. You can copy other peoples names and they can copy yours. You just can't copy your own. Try it on someone besides yourself before spouting nonsense telling people they are wrong.

Spouting nonsense? I was just wrong. No need to get hostile about it. Do you always take yourself and the world so personally?

I was just upset that you were putting the same wrong info out there in multiple threads. But calling me out for it instead. I shouldn't have responded so harshly though. I'm sorry.

No worries. It's my fault for being wrong in the first place. And now I get to pay for it by buying a rename token lol
