You get it from a lock box.
To grow old is inevitable, to grow up is optional.
Please review my campaign and I'll return the favor.

You can purchase "Profession Asset Packs", I believe the name is, from the Z-Store. These give you a chance at an employee of varying ability to augment your crafting.

At higher levels there are crafting recipes to merge 4 of one asset into a rarer one. Takes 18 hours, for the first upgrade recipe, at like craft level 7 or something.

Of course, the only way to get the lower quality asset is still to get it through a zen bought box (or the AH).

Actually, I believe that you can craft up a few first tier minions through the system. They take 18hrs. each, so it is a major in-game time sink. Unless you REALLY plan to be with the game a while, or to spend some SERIOUS A.D. or Zen, then crafting may not be for you, at least as far as I can tell.

You can hire unlimited rank 1 common assets at 18h each. 4 rank 1 assets -> 1 rank 2 common asset for another 18h. That's the one at level 6 or 7. I assume higher levels continues this, 4 rank 2 commons -> 1 rank 3 common, 4 rank 3 commons -> 1 rank 3 uncommon, etc.

If I'm wrong it's moot, green assets are on the AH for 10k AD, which is a few dailies and a couple invocations.

You can view the higher level tasks in your profession window and see the progression of assets. Using Mailsmithing as an example:

Prospectors can be upgraded to Blacksmiths, and those can be upgraded to Assistant Mailsmiths. Mailsmiths can be upgraded to Master Mailsmiths, and Master Mailsmiths can be upgraded to Grandmaster Mailsmiths.

Assistant Mailsmiths cannot be upgraded to Mailsmiths. You will, at some point, need to get assets from the packs (whether purchased directly or through the AH) in order to get the highest quality assets.

So, hiring more than one or two of the basic people assets is a waste of time, as you can't upgrade them all the way up. It's nice to have an extra, though, as it makes task grinding go more quickly. However, at some point, the basic asset will not work for your tasks. You will need to upgrade four Prospectors to a Blacksmith, or you will need to get one of the higher-quality assets.

Eh, not pleased with that. Oh well.

You can also get "free" blessed profession packs every 5 days through invocation, which I think have a chance for uncommon+ assets. Right?

Yep. I got one yesterday, got a green guy. I have two purple tailors from lockbox drops and they increase speed by +25 each, so four of those will get you that +100 boost on a job that allows four workers.

Once you get those...upgraded employees in the box...can they be re-used? or is it a one time thing?

"Assets" are reusable things. "Resources" are expended.

Using Leadership as the example here, your Mercenary is an asset. He'll be returned to you once the task is complete. Other assets are armor, weapons and the like. Resources would be things like maps, porridge, and so on; these are used up by the task and are not returned.
