I played in BW4 and powerleveled Leadership and some tailoring.
I'm currently level 30 on my Cleric and level 5 Mailsmithing. I have to say that the Profession system feels VERY incomplete.
First of all I bought a couple of Profession packs because I felt the Closed beta was SUPER slow to level professions, unless you wanted to put like 6 million AD into it. (looking at you level 60's) I have played over the weekend and Achieved my goal of level 30 yay... except that even with my trading for 3 blue mailsmiths and focusing on just mailsmithing... it still can only make around level 16 items.
The leveling of Professions is just... to... slow. Now I really asked myself about this before I decided to give feedback on it. I played and have played Fallen Earth since it went Free to play... I have spent a week making myself a motorcycle. I love time based que crafting systems, they give SUCH a sense of achievement. However the amount of time it takes to level vs. how long it takes to level a profession is not on par. It takes FAR longer to level professions than your character. Now I like the pace of character leveling, I just think that the level scaling of professions in comparison to the level scaling of the player is to slow. I don't know how this scales post level 30; or how hard it is to hit level 20 in a profession, but for the first 1/2 of the game its very lackluster and disappointing. Had I known that gear crafting while leveling was going to be so useless I would have just gone Leadership.
Second; we (the community) really need an explanation of crafting, I don't know if you guys are communicative with your Alpha peoples, but I honestly have no idea how the Item Assets work. If I have a worn hammer (white quality) and an Iron hammer (green) does the total quality stack? meaning I get 8%(white) and 16%(green) for a total of 24%? If that is the case it makes no sense... and needs to be explained that that IS how it works... and that I can use like 50 white items to gain extra quality. If this is not the case then Mailsmithing, Tailoring, and Leadership have a max of 80%(180% total)... which (According to the Neverwinter wiki) Means those professions cannot make Tier 3 gear... So jut to make this clear.... Control Wizards, Devoted Clerics, and Great Weapon Fighters cannot obtain the same Tier of gear as Guardian Fighters and Rogues? Well... thats broken and unfinished.

Also... 18 hours for new people assets? Thats 72 hours for each green asset, 288 hours- for each blue, and 5184 hours(Jesus...) for a purple. Why is it 18 for the white? Shouldn't there be some scaling here? Like 4 hours for white, 6 for green, 8 for blue and 10 for purple? I realize that this is a Beta and things are not finished... People are paying for this though... I would think that being allowed to put 32$ (2 profession asset packages) would mean that the system I paying into would be at least useable. 3/5's of a year for one purple asset seems WAY over the top excessive...
Lastly I want to point out that I would have not had such a problem with the above if I didn't find it out from playing the game, but instead from Devs who informed their Admins who informed the CMs who communicated with the huge playerbase. Communication from the Devs was my biggest issue in BW2... and in 3... and in 4. Now that we are into the Open Beta and no longer needing to care about an NDA I was hoping this would change... and yet all we still have is the player written "official" wiki, and player speculation on the forums.
Well... Thats my thoughts; What has your experience with Neverwinter's crafting been like?
P.S. TLDR: Profession Leveling is to slow in early levels, and broken for CW, DC, and GWF at 60, needs to be looked at.

The thing is, unlike the STO system and similar ones like SWTOR, Neverwinter's crafting system is integrated with the web portal. You can access your crafting menu while out of game. Potentially on your mobile phone, even. So the very long timers are designed with that in mind.
With that said, I get your meaning about the total time investment for some things being very very high. I'm not really qualified to comment on that, I'm just pointing out the reasoning here. It's worth noting that Cryptic does seem to have a thing about long periods of real-world time being necessary to unlock higher-end items; the same complaint has been made about STO's rep system.
Like I said I'm a Fallen Earth fan, Vehicle crafting in that game can take an ungodly amount of time, and it works much how neverwinter works... except the time slots are better for keeping stuff going while sleeping and at work... (literally it can take 3-7 days on some projects)
My main issue with the time isn't the amount of time it takes, its how badly it syncs with levels... If you can hit 60 in 1 day and 4 hours then you should at LEAST be able to get to level 10-12 in that amount of time... yet without spending AD its not going to happen.
Crafting is not there to help you powerlevel. It's an optional bonus minigame that can give you a bit extra currency on the side. If you can get to 60 in 28 hours then you don't need to bother with crafting at all.
So you hit L20, craft some purple gear, and it has one stat that does nothing for your build .... epic. Maybe I missed something, but there are only 2 rating types for each tier of mailsmith gear?
I'm doing Tailoring atm, not spending any AD to boost my speed. It's really slow but if you don't want to hurry you'll get there, I think that it's a good entertainment besides leveling.

I'm puzzled about the crafting tools though. How do they work? I have a bunch of them, but I can't figure out what they do and how to use them. The description in the wiki is sorely lacking, and I've never seen any effect from them. Are they used automatically just by being in your inventory? How can you identify crafting recipes that grant various tiers of quality?
By the way, when calculating the amount of hours needed to do something in this system, keep in mind that you can have as many as 9 different crafting tasks going at once. In theory this could reduce the 5184 hours mentioned in the OP to 576 (24 days), which is a far more manageable number.

Also Something about the Assets is that you cannot improve your people or tools.
There is a way to turn Greens to blue and Blue to purple. But there isn't way aside from the profession pack to turn the whites into greens That I can find...
