Misguided Potential is a small Neverwinter adventuring group.

The challenges we face together are great and it is through trust in each other that we overcome these obstacles. It is only through time that this foundation strengthens into respect and loyalty. While many seek initiation, it is with honor that we bestow membership to those worthy.

Being an easygoing group, we are a haven for players that need to progress at their own pace due to real life priorities, secure in the knowledge that they will always be welcome in the guild. We repay this understanding with mutual devotion and thus are able to rely upon one another.

We generally play on a roleplaying server. As a guild, we are not roleplayers, but we do the best we can to respect the community and continue immersion. Although we do not roleplay in guild-chat, we do attempt to speak in character when interacting with the world around us.

While we have a healthy sense of humor, we do have limits and are rather strict about our laws and recruitment... so read those links because joining an MP guild means you agree to that stuff. We guild the person, not the character.

Our approach to Neverwinter is very casual. We'll have some regularly scheduled events, but nothing is required. We intend on staying a rather small group. We're 18+ but most of us are in our 30s or older. This is something more like a D&D adventuring group. People online at the time are going to be the decision makers for that night's adventure. Logins will be sporadic. Grouping and events will need to be initiated by those interested. The adventure is what the group makes it.

    Yesterday was the 10 year anniversary of the day we made our first guild together in DAoC. Over the years, we've made some mistakes, learned some lessons, played more than a few games and managed to pick up a few new friends.

    We never intended to make a guild or a gaming community. It just happened out of a stubborn desire to keep gaming together. Our interest in a game may fizzle, we may wander off for a time, conflicts arise and get resolved, and we keep coming back to this online gaming family that started a decade ago.

    You can still find our original guild from DAoC, Circle of Trust, still going through our great and powerful Wubbie who posted this yesterday to the Circle of Trust facebook page:

    LAWS

    Required of All

    Misguided Potential is a guild of friends, minds, personalities and values. Our diversification makes us strong, but it is important to agree and abide by a few core guidelines of behavior. Each member is a representative of the guild everyday. It is important to remember that your actions reflect directly upon our reputation and should do so favorably. As a member, it is your responsibility to understand, support and abide by these laws:


    Banned - Anything deemed a bannable offense to the game company will cause you to be removed from the guild.

    Language - Use of language that is racist and/or sexist will not be tolerated. The guild does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, disability, gender, or sexual orientation. If you have problems mixing with people different from yourself, then don't join. It is improper behavior to use profanity in any form of public communication. Public communication is defined as any communication that can be read/heard by those outside of our guild. Regarding guild chat, the guild is an adult one, and as such there maybe the use of strong language. If you have young children looking over your shoulder, or are easily offended yourself, we suggest you leave the profanity filter on and use a headset for any voice chat. We discourage the discussion of passionate topics such as religion and politics within guild chat.

    Begging - Begging is not allowed. A guild member may request assistance at any time, but no member should ever feel obligated to comply. There is a difference between begging and requesting. You are expected to know that difference, as your words are open to interpretation by others online.

    Respect - Respect your fellow players. Everyone has just as much right to enjoy their playtime as anyone else.


    If you are accused of being in violation of a law, your case will be decided by the Core Council. You will be given the right to speak in your defense. The punishment, if any, is indisputable once decided upon.


    Other Game Disclaimer

    We do tend to play many different games together. Before doing so, it is important that you understand that you can be held accountable for any unpleasant behavior you may exhibit while playing any game with guildies. You (the person, not the character) are in the guild, therefore, you (the person, not the character) are expected to behave in a way befitting our guild at all times in all games where you are representing yourself as part of this guild.

    Any difficulties within any game we play together, regardless of what guild tag we have above our heads, can effect your overall membership with Misguided Potential.

    For Neverwinter, they're saying that guild voice chat will be available in-game. If that is the case, we won't be using an outside company for voice chat. Our etiquette policy is still in effect.

    Guild Voice Chat Etiquette

    Although it is not our intention to encourage a mindless celebration of cursing, often in gaming profane language does get used and sometimes liberally. Some members have a more colorful vocabulary than others. Please use voice-chat with the understanding that you will occasionally hear offensive language. If you have children or anyone who is sensitive to foul language around you while you use it, we recommend that you use a headset. If you are offended by this type of language, you may not want to use our guild voice chat.

    Also please be aware that some innuendo does get tossed around. Those partaking in this kind of discussion need to understand that what is acceptable varies from person to person. Please use your best judgment to keep things lighthearted and acceptable to those online.

    We don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable, so voice chat is never required. If you are grouped with someone who chooses not to use voice chat, please respect their choice and use text to communicate with them.

    That all being said, we do cover language in our guild laws:

    Guild Law #2 Use of language that is racist and/or sexist will not be tolerated.

    This includes but is not limited to discussion/language that is disrespectful to race, gender, sexual preference, religion, disability, etc. If you have problems mixing with people different from yourself, then join another guild. Bigoted viewpoints will not be tolerated in text or voice chat. This includes the common game-slang use of the words “****” and “<font color="orange">HAMSTER</font>” as both have been sensitive issues in the past. Use of these terms does slip out accidentally from time to time, but we ask that you make an honest attempt to refrain from using them.

    If someone is intentionally trying to make people uncomfortable or being sexually explicit then it goes into a harassment issue and that will not be tolerated.

    Since we have friends in several different guilds, we created a chat channel we can all use to chat, share info as we explore the game, find groups, talk about cool foundry projects, etc. /MP was taken, so we are /MPG (for Multi-Playing-Guilds, since this channel is for multiple guilds to use for playing together).

    We thought about a fancier, alliancy sounding name, but the reality is that you can use something else as your default channel and just do a quick "/mpg anyone want to group?" to chat there. Much easier than "/SuperfriendsAllianceOfAwesomeness anyone want to group?"

    Currently there is no password to join, so join up and tell your guildies to do the same. I've personally guilded with all the guilds we've reached out to, so I can vouch for their classiness (or lack thereof).

    TO JOIN, just type: /channel_join mpg

    TO SEND A SINGLE MESSAGE TO THE CHANNEL , just type: /mpg before your message, e.g. /mpg yo hommies, that Winin is awesome!

    TO SET IT AS YOUR DEFAULT CHAT CHANNEL, just type: /MPG [then hit enter.] and chat away.


    This public chat was born out of friendship and the desire to give like-minded guilds the ability to support each other on a larger scale. There are no restraints imposed on who can use the chat, although below you will see a code of conduct which we ask all to respect when using it to accommodate the different guild atmospheres invited.

    No Abuse: This covers topics such as race, gender, sexual preference, religion etc. If you have problems mixing with people different from yourself, then don't join this chat.

    Don't Argue: From time to time conflicts and disagreements will arise over chat, but if you cannot resolve the dispute in a mature fashion then take it to a more private chat.

    No Elitism: Elitist remarks which only serve to belittle someone are unacceptable. If someone asks a question over chat, help if you are able to or allow someone else to.

    Don't Moan about everything over the chat. Typical moans would be from dying often, class limitations, bugs, or real life issues that are getting you down. We are all sympathetic to RL issues, but not everybody wants to hear about them. Most people have their own problems that they logged online to get away from. If you are feeling down, seek out a friend and chat privately.

    No Rail-Roading people into doing stuff they clearly don't want to do. Don't assume because you're enthusiastic about something that others are. It's great that you want to do something with everyone, but not everyone may possess the beans you do that evening and may just want to chill out.

    Role-play: If you choose to roleplay in the chat, remember that it is not a license to break the Code of Conduct in any way. Fantasy based grudges and other interactions are allowed so long as they are consistent, do not use real world terms and is not done in a harassing manner.

    No Spamming: Spamming includes repeating the same message over and over, as well as using CAPITALS CONSTANTLY! Flooding the chat window like this can cause other messages to be missed. It will quite often result in people leaving the chat or adding the individual to ignore - all of which does not help us communicate. This is not a channel to spam recruitment for your guild, but you could still use it as a recruitment tool by simply being known as a supportive and helpful guild through the use of the chat.

    No Profanity: Try to refrain from this and any inappropriate subject matter in this public channel. This is a large mix of guild and therefore we do not know the ages of those reading the messages.

    Religion and politics are two rather passionate subjects that are popular subjects of disagreement. If you would like to discuss these things, please do so in a private chat. This is not the chat for that.

    Neverwinter is a free game that is easy to jump into, get some gaming done and be off again. This is great for the casual gamer, but it's a difficulty in terms of anytime-online support for our little group. People are on very sporadically and the support isn't always around when you need it. Just like you would plan to meet up weekly with your D&D group, We're going to have some weekly events that everyone can count on for our adventuring group activity. Some of the details will be worked out after launch, but here's the basic idea.

    Please note that we understand that you may be online at these times and have other gaming goals for your evening. While you are always welcome, no events are required.

    Sundays : 9PM EST : Pillage and Plunder
    We'll go to one of the open areas in the game (like Blacklake) and slaughter everything in our paths, looting as we go. All participants are welcome to keep any of the plunder they receive. It will be customary to provide one donation to the guild bank (once we get one). This event is not an excuse to break our guild law #4. We will be aware of those around us and not intrude upon their game experience.

    Tuesdays : 9PM EST : PvP Night
    I haven't tried it out but why not go in together (if that's allowed?)? We'll work out the details as we figure this out. I have no idea how queue times will effect this idea.

    Thursdays : 9PM EST : Group Skirmishes / Foundry content
    I believe if you're grouped when you queue for a skirmish (like Helm's Hold), then you all go in together, but we'll need to test that out. Also I think levels don't matter for a skirmish? I know nothing of Foundry content and grouping but we'll work that all out.

    Those with the ability to invite must make sure the person is registered on our forums before doing so.
    We never blind invite or mass invite to our guild.

    Details on Joining

    Expectations and Assumptions

    We understand that real life priorities always come first. After your initiation into the guild, no activity, meeting or event is ever required. Understand that we take very seriously the actions and behavior of anyone wearing our guild tag. What you should expect from the guild is a group that supports and relies upon each other to accomplish goals with a seasoned sense of humor. If this sounds like how you want to play the game, read further.


    Before Applying
    Before applying to Misguided Potential you should read through this post and also read our Laws.

    Your application to this guild confirms that you've read and agreed to our laws and joining procedure. You will not be asked about the information on those pages, but if you do something that goes against our laws, claiming ignorance will do nothing to help your case.


    Application Process

    Those joining are asked to register and post an introduction on the forum.

    You will be invited in-game as an Initiate.

    Individuals are added to the guild on a probationary period.

    You must be at least 18 years old to apply.


    Initiate Review Process

    Initiate review lasts a minimum of 2 weeks.

    At the end of the review period each initiate will have 1 of 3 things happen:

    1. Promoted to Member
    2. Removed from the guild
    3. Remain an initiate


    A. In order to be promoted to Confidant (full member status) one must be online regularly, interact with guildies, and receive little to no negative feedback from current guild members.

    B. If a person receives too much negative feedback that cannot be resolved then they will be asked to leave the guild. We're sorry it's just not a good fit at this time.

    C. If a person fails to post an introduction on the forum, or is unable to be online regularly, they will remain an initiate. Initiates who disappear completely for more than 30 days will be removed from the guild. You are welcome to reapply once you begin playing again.


    Clauses & Special Notes

    30-day rule: Any initiate (who is not guilded under the friends/family clause) who does not sign on for more than 30 days will be removed from the guild roster. We understand that life happens. You are welcome to re-apply if you begin playing again. This applies to Initiates only.

    3-tries rule: If an individual is not promoted to member after going through 3 initiate review periods (6 weeks) their guild status will be decided by the Councilors.


    Exceptions to Initiate Trial Rules

    Past Guild Members
    People who were once members of a Multiplaying guild may post for board access and contact an officer in game for their guild tag. You will skip the Initiate phase and go straight to the appropriate rank. Please note that you must have left these guilds on good terms for this to apply.


    Friends/Partners/Family of Current Guild Members:
    Partners, friends or family members of existing guild members should post an intro post but do not have to. They will remain at perma-Initiate rank until they do. This requires an assumed sponsorship by the guild member relation. The current guild member that is sponsoring them will have to post an introduction even if that person does not register on the forum so that the guild knows who they are. Their Initiation trial has no end-date. The perma-Initiate will only be removed from the guild if their sponsor becomes inactive. Individuals guilded through the Friends and Family clause will be guilded as Initiates. Should they choose to become a guild member, they will be moved up to the appropriate guild rank once they register on the forum. A "friend" must be a real life friend for 6 months or more.


    Members of Allied Guilds:
    Due to our close association with Children of the New Sun through past MMOs, members of this guild are always welcome in our guild, even if there is a freeze on recruitment, assuming:

    They left CotNS on good terms.

    CotNS is not active on the same server/side as we are.

    They had been a member of CotNS for 3 months or more.


    They will be perma-Initiate until they post an introduction on our forums. Once that is done, they will receive the appropriate membership rank.


    Disclaimer
    All guild polices are intended to be guidelines. The Councilors, Trustees and Cores reserve the right to act outside of these guidelines as the situation warrants.

    How to treat new guild members

    When we accept an applicant as an initiate, it is our guild's trial as well. People judge the entire guild by the actions you take. As an individual, you hold a great deal of influence over this person's perception of our guild and you should reflect the guild accurately.

    1. Say hello
    Not everyone has to spam hello to a person when we invite a new initiate, but make sure that the person receives a relatively warm welcome on the board and in-game at the time of invitation.

    2. Do not ask “Who are you?”
    A new recruit in our guild has posted an introduction on the forums before they can be invited. As a responsible guild member, you should know who this person is. If you don't, then you should take the mere seconds it takes to check the guild notes. The person will be listed at Initiate rank if nothing else. At this point, if you are totally new to this individual, you should introduce yourself and welcome them to the guild. Joining a new guild is intimidating. The initiate is trying to find out where they belong and figure out the social atmosphere of the guild. It seems rather egotistical to have members who cannot bother themselves to look up something so simple. They're making quite an effort. Meet them halfway.

    3. Game with them
    Bored? Doing absolutely nothing productive? Take a quick look at who's online. If there is a new member online, look to see their level and class and their location. If you have a character at that level, ask if they'd like some company. If you don't have a character at that level, try to think of something you can invite them to do with you. It is more our responsibility to get to know an initiate than there's to get to know us. We are responsible for accepting these people into our guild and we need to make educated decisions.

    4. Respond
    If an initiate makes a request or asks a question or attempts in any way to make contact, it is important that someone responds. Even if you have no desire to do what is requested, a simple “I can't do that right now” is far better than silence. Not everyone is an extrovert, but none of us are shy within guild chat. You don't have to comply, but answer and be honest. Don't say that you're logging and remain online for another 2 hours. New to the guild does not equal being new to the game.

    It is amazing how many guilds out there do not do these 4 simple things. In many guilds there is very much the sense that the initiate is a peon and that the members are better than this person. Yes, members have earned the respect of the guild but that doesn't mean you toss it away by acting like an elitist d-bad at the first chance you get. There's no territory to <font color="orange">HAMSTER</font> on here. We take care of each other and we show this.


    Why Initiates are so important

    A guild’s character is exhibited everywhere: how friendly our members are when talking in area channels, how they spell and construct sentences, how they post in forums and, perhaps most crucially, how they conduct themselves in PUGs (Pick up Groups ie. Consisting not solely of guild members). Every individual member, regardless of guild rank, represents our guild. As such, we should be confident in the integrity of every one of our members to represent us capably. Interguild Member Interaction is one factor in the game we each have very little direct control over, but we must trust our members to be good people, as we chose them.

    We should be aware that we are always going to have people come in and want the guild to be what they need. We don't tailor the guild to the members; we invite members who want what the guild is offering. It's very important to have a community that stands together against this, sometimes relentless, assault for unwanted change.



    Initiate Invitation Policy

    *1. Only guild members of Confidant rank and up can invite to the guild. As a member, you've read and agreed to our information found on our site. You know what is expected of a member and what works in our guild. You must be sure the person has posted an introduction to the guild on our forums and inquire as to whether they are 18+ years of age. If you are uncertain about this or you haven't read the procedure for someone joining this guild, then you shouldn't be inviting people.

    2. Never blind invite to the guild. Do not send guild invites to people you have not played with and talked to. We don't care about having a large number of members. We're interested in people who are interested in being a part of this guild, not just a guild.

    3. We never invite someone who is already guilded elsewhere. If someone should talk to you about membership in our guild and they are already a member of another guild, be clear that we can only discuss membership in our guild if they are unguilded first and we do not promise membership in advance. We have this rule because otherwise it can appear as though we are taking members from other guilds. It's a quick way to major drama and unpopularity on our server community.

    **4. People must post on the forum before inviting them. Posting on our forum lets us know who they are and lets them know our guild laws and information. It helps us know their seniority date which effects their position within the guild. It also gives them access to preplanned guild events and discussions. It helps them be a member of this guild and shows us that they want to be.

    5. Always explain to an interested recruit that we are an adult guild (18+) and ask them if they qualify.

    6. Friends and Family that are 18+ are always welcome to join our guild, but you, as their friend/family, have taken responsibility for this person. They do not have to post on the forums, but they will remain at Initiate status until they do. Should they decide not to post on the forums, you must take on sponsorship of them. That means you will post an introduction on the forum for them and vouch for their character and agree to handle any issues that arise. If they do post on the forums, they will continue through the normal Initiation phase for membership. If you and the initiate do not post an intro on the forums, they will be deguilded until that is done.


    Concerns
    If you, as a member of this guild, are concerned about an Initiate joining our guild, it is your responsibility to contact a guild leader or officer (please PM through our forums or email) and let them know what's going on. This guild is full of great people and we want to keep it that way. If you notice someone is acting in a way that is not acceptable, speaking up before they become a member will head off drama, save our reputation as this person wears our guild tag, and possibly prevent great people from leaving to avoid the Initiate.

    LOOT
    We use a Round Robin Need Before Greed system.
    We've always used the simple Need/Greed system. Need roll, followed by Greed roll.
    Guild Parties may act outside of these rules if all agree before they begin.

    NEED
    If your present class and spec Needs an item, roll Need.

    After you have won a Need roll, you must pass on Need items if another present party member Needs the item.

    If no one else Needs the item, those who already won an item may roll Need if their present character's class and spec Needs the item.

    If your class or current spec does not need the item then don't roll.


    GREED
    Greed an item only if no one in the party Needs it. Even if someone has already won multiple Needs, Needs always come before Greeds. For Greed rolls, round robin them, so if you already won a Greed, you don't roll on a Greed again on the run until everyone receives a Greed item.


    Crafting/Gathering Items
    Characters with gathering abilities should inquire with other characters regarding loot. When more than one gatherer of the same type of materials is in the group, it is suggested to use round robin aspect.

    Crafting items can be rolled Need if the character present is the crafter. Crafting items do NOT count towards a person's loot Need roll for the run. If the item in not Needed by a present crafter, then it should go to a Greed roll unless otherwise determined by the group. Members are reminded that it benefits the entire guild to have our crafters well supplied.


    Chests
    Roll Greed for chests. Once you win a chest, you must pass on all remaining chests for that run until everyone receives one. Players that are not interested may pass.


    Consumables
    All consumables are rolled as greed. Players that are not interested or who cannot use the consumable (unneeded stats) may pass.


    Ninja Looting & Other Unacceptable Practices
    Ninja Looting is never acceptable. This includes running over and taking a chest that another player is fighting for, regardless of guild.

    Laying in wait for another player to be killed in battle by the enemy, and then move in to take the kill is forbidden. Providing assistance to other players in need when it is possible is highly encouraged.

    Leadership reserves the right to change this policy at any time should a more fluid/fair system suite us better.
