Some of us didn't get keys (STO or CO lifetime members) and are still getting the problem.

Yeah--major bummer. I know it's beta and they're trying to make sure all this doesn't happen during actual launch--but Sweet Jeebus I was looking forward to playing beta. Hopefully it gets worked out before tomorrow so I can give it a shot and, of course, provide my invaluable input.
Me too, put in a ticket yesterday, STO Lifetimer, still getting account error. My chances of getting in on this Beta are looking pretty slim.

not being able to handle the accounts properly tells everything about the competence of the devs already...

Not really, devs don't deal with accounts at all, that's just administration dept.
If admins forgot to check the checkbox for nw beta in their database then you won't get in, it's as simple as that.
I pre-ordered Torchlight II last year for my key. Thing is, so much time has passed that I don't remember whether or not I got an actual beta key. I seem to remember putting it in on my PW account screen, but I'm not 100% sure... Anyway, I'm still getting "account error" and it's now Sunday afternoon where I am! Yeah, my stupid memory sucks, but this beta fiasco is a sore disappointment. Bad show PW, bad show. :P
Edit: I clicked the link quoted above, and got this:
Redemption Date: Jan 30 2013 07:20AM, Key Redeemed: Neverwinter Starter Kit
So I guess I don't have beta access after all. But I really did pre-order T2 direct from... ****, Steam. But I was sure they said beta access as part of the deal. Hmm. Me and my HAMSTER memory...
For the record, STO Lifetimer, "Account Error" for me as well

k, i bought Founder's this last week and performed direct download. So far, all I'm getting is an account error when i try to log-in. I have submitted a ticket but not recieved any info., on a patch nor any e-mail on all this. Was really looking forward to trying the game this weekend. I have tried to logging in several times already.
I bought TL II a while ago and entered the key into PW and saved off my email, just in case. Doesn't seem to matter though. I got a response on my ticket yesterday saying it takes 4 to 5 days for them to fix it. Well, that's way beyond beta 2. Guess this means I have to wait for a beta 3 or when the game goes live. Whole reason I bought TL II was so I can get into this beta. Yeah...I'm lame. Oh well...they don't need my input. Just hope this game doesn't suck.

I'am also a STO Lifetimer and got the account error too.
But i've finally solved this problem.
Try this, start your STO (or CO) launcher, not the Neverwinter launcher and log in with your "old" cryptic account. A browser windows pop's up and asking to link your cryptic account with an existing pe account. Choose "No" and a registration form will be loaded. Registrate a new pe account (even you have one already, who is probably completly empty and without any account info's for STO or CO) and it will link your cryptic account properly. You can now see your features of for your STO/CO Lifetime membership and you can log on to the beta of Neverwinter.
This worked for me, it seems that the linking process through the Neverwinter launcher only registrate a new empty pe account.
Don't forget to have a spare email account if you have already registrated to a pe account.

I have also the "account error" too, bought the founder pack 2 weeks ago
I reinstalled STO for this and found out that it doesn't work what you wrote.
You have to login with a pw account and you're never asked for any other account type.

Only the neverwinter installer asked for it once.
