I'd like steam too - though if I was a publisher, and I thought I could get a bunch of cash for my game, and not have anyone 'dip in' to the profits - I might try to run 'solo' for a while, and not give steam their cut, (small though it may be,) for a little while at least - then - do a big push on Steam, and see what response I could get from that community a bit down the road.
As a Player, and a fan of steam and having all of my games available via the steam client - I'd prefer an 'out of the gate' solution - I can blame them for trying to 'get what they can' with out steam for a bit though.

I think NW will do just fine without the promotion of Steam too, however if things are looking negative there is always that option.
I would really like to see Neverwinter 'officially' supported on Steam (like STO and CO are (and some other PW games)) with achievements and everything would be great!!!!
I duno about 'buying it' (or the starter packages) on Steam, since it will be a FTP game.. .
