LOVED DDO, thought this looked very close to it but after reading the review I knew I had to go ahead and get into Beta.

Just sorry I missed the first Beta weekend.

It is not DDO2. If you have that in mind you will be disappointed.

Think of it as LOTRO which tells D&D story and allows you to make good storytelling quests.

It is not a game based on D&D mechanics but is a MMO which tells D&D stories in D&D world.

It simulates many of the mechanics though and offers the standard classes/races D&D fans have loved for decades. It's essentially just converted them to an MMO engine, making game play more compatible with the medium. DDO, in my tiny opinion, didn't do that effectively, because truly, paper D&D mechanics just do not lend itself to a successful digital design.

It most certainly provides a canvas on which to tell your own story, as both a character and as a GM, bringing us a step closer to a D&D gaming table than DDO ever did.

Just a few notes on how this game differs from DDO.

    -Very flashy combat animations

-Character customization is extremely lackluster compared to DDO, imho. I'm pretty sure it's going to be improved upon by the time the game is released.

-It's not as in-depth as DDO, IE; you don't have skill points, only +1 feat per level, and +2 attributes every 10 levels IIRC. I really wish they had implemented all the DnD skills like DDO has done.

All in all, this game is great though. I'd highly recommend it if you're having trouble finding a solid game to play lately. I played the first VIP beta weekend, and it was fan-HAMSTER-tastic. If it's even improved in the slightest by the time it launches, I can see this game becoming very popular.

Can't say much more than what's already been said :) but definately faster paced combat and more instanced than DDO. Slightly similar but different. Both very D&D :)

LOTRO? I haven't played the beta, but it seem like this game is completely unlike LOTRO. LOTRO is a WoW-clone with LotR setting. Not action-combat at all.

That said, it's not really DDO2 either. DDO's uniquely defining characteristic is character build customization, far beyond anything else I've ever seen in an MMO, especially Neverwinter. Also, its approach to action-combat is pretty unique, with emphasis on movement over rooted animations. I expect combat in Neverwinter will feel very different from DDO.

Well we were told we would get more customization of stats, skills, feats, etc post-launch

I know I'm not the only one, but I'm really bothered that this Cryptic game has less customization than their competitors, usually it's the other way round. How the hell did that happen?

Talking about ddo.. it is really one of the best games I have tried and I have bought mucho maps on that game. However their game downloads and patchers stopped working for me ever since I have tried to reinstall the game after a long break.. seems that their game does not work on win7 or win xp nowadays. Something is simply wrong with their patch servers or download files...

In neverwinter, the patching and downloading of the game worked flawlessly for me and I'm just glad and relieved.
Beats having to reinstall ddo 10 over times, tinkering with windows7 UAC etc and waiting for the update that never seems to get past 'waiting' .. patch servers that does not connect..

So here I am! Extremely glad that there are no connectivity issues thus far, with game download and game patching! Like you, can't wait to get started!

The game has zero resemblance to DDO- not saying you won't like it- just don't expect to see any similarities in game, and approach it with an entirely open mind.
