Would love to see more of a variety of weapons usable by each class put into the game. Maybe in some form of weapon specialization or something along those lines.
Looking for a family that you can game with for life? Check out Grievance at www.grievanceguild.com !
I believe talking about choices, customization and variety is not such a great idea at this stage for it is clear to see that we saw only a small portion of the game in this first beta weekend.

Seems like the intend more weapons as some people had other types of weapons drop (axes for rogues for example) but they were fairly rare. Just seems like itemization is at the early stages atm
Choice of weapons is tertiary; not the kind of thing they'd prioritise in initial beta. Without question, there will be a variety of weapons. Weapon Focus is a feat integral to the Fighter, even in 4th edition.

That's assuming they respect the rules. Haven't seen much of that. Instead of using the core classes they're presenting us with prefabs from the PHB, and have yet to present a way to customize our build or mention if that's an available feature in the future.
would be nice to be able to select a mace or warhammer for a cleric, but we are only in the beta at the moment just have to wait and see what the full game brings.

As far as I've seen they have feats and "paragon specialization".
As for not using the core classes but rather builds I believe they made that choice because it would be easier on the game mechanics and balancing. If we get an equivalent customization as the freeform in CO then I believe that the game will either become too easy to allow as many builds as possible to become viable, or the game will only have a few viable builds. It seems they've chosen the "a few viable" option and made them into prefabs (as you put it).

I remember when I played NW nights. I loved how you could customize your character in that game. You couldnt really deviate from the story at all, but customization was still cool. Then DDO came around and you could still really customize your character but the problem came with all the power builds people came out with. If you got to 10th level and didnt have +5 everything, you were gimped... The power classes got so powerful that there was a raid with a pit fiend as the final boss.. His hit points were in the millions. A little far fetched for D&D... Plus the fact that a +5 sword is considered a "legendary artifact" and everyone seems to have one is a little disappointing.

I cant imagine that we would be stuck with that default cross. There has always been customization. I didn't get to play the first beta but was it not part of the weapon slot?
Just curious because it sounds like things are really limited right now.

Sadly what we got is the devoted cleric who dont use weapons give me back my standard battle cleric with a mace.
Personally I'd like to see the spear added eventually. So many games seem to glance over this weapon choice.
YES!!!
Big hammers, maces, axes, and swords can pretty much all use the same animation. Pole-arms and spears could use a different animation but it would be worth it. Great Weapons Fighters specialize in using big weapons and should have spears/pole-arms available to them.

It can not be true that my human guardian fighter ONLY can handle SWORDS!!! Come on, this isn't D&D like!
In fact it's real important that there has to be some more weapon specialising options. Otherwise no player can individualize their characters.
..And the trickster rogue shouldn't be reduced to handle 2! daggers and axes only! This can't be! ..Maybe he wants to attack with a bow or crossbow.. Even the rapier is often used by them..

Though I agree I can't see this happening, the clerics based on ranged fighting in this game the current skill tree doesn't lend itself to melee weapons.
