Neverwinter vs other D&D MMORPG competitors

Will there be something special in Neverwinter which will make it really stand out from the other games which offer a very nice fix of MMORPG gaming for a D&D enthusiast?

The only reason I decided not to get a $60 or $200 founder's pack for Neverwinter is that I haven't discovered any features that will make Neverwinter stand apart from the other D&D MMORPG competition. If I want some action combat and co-op playing, then I turn to Dungeons & Dragons Online. If I want much better role-playing experience with even better graphics and even more "true" MMO experience (in the sense that you can sometimes travel in 15-25 player groups) than in Dungeons & Dragons Online, then I turn to the biggest and most popular persistent world of NWN 2 called Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicle.

If only BGTSCC would respect community content authors wishes, you might have a point. For instance. You'd be better off on another PW if you like NWN2 as that PW is preventing people from releasing content for everyone because of their actions.

I predict this thread gets sent to the depths.

There are two: Neverwinter and DDO.

They are different enough, probably by license design. One is ARPG, the other a fair curve to get into and understand. One my wife could play and do well all on her own, the other I'd have to train for a year at least before she'd get most of it, I'm still getting things, there is learning DnD and then learning how DDO does their DnD. That said she has played DDO (rogue), but I had to do all the character building for her. One game few buttons, the other, so many they have 20 power bars you can display at once.

The other game mentioned has what a 75 player at once max to it, I wouldn't consider this a mmo.

One thing I didn't like about DDO is that they have overcomplicated many crafting systems. I also didn't like having many hotbars opened with dozens and dozens of buttons. If Neverwinter will be more simple, I might actually like it more than DDO. However, I like the concept of playing through small adventure modules in groups of six people in DDO. Another thing which was a lot of fun in DDO was the events like Crystal Cove, Halloween event and Festivult. Will people be able to make similar adventures designed for 4-6 player groups using Foundry and will there be some unique fun events in Neverwinter? Another thing I didn't like about DDO is that people went to do adventures from the city. It would have been more fun to unite open world environment with the adventure module concept, so that player groups would need to travel through dangerous open world first before they could enter some adventure. Will Neverwinter have a large open world or only a small environment which only serves to send people to complete adventures like in DDO?

I wouldn't dismiss BGTSCC even though it can handle only 70 players online. The level of role-playing is quite exceptional like on many other NWN 1 and NWN 2 persistent worlds and BGTSCC rivals small MMORPGs in terms of scale and the size of player community and number of people who have participated in its development. It is a very good alternative to DDO because it offers some things which DDO cannot offer. It has a relatively large open world, more PvP features and you can sometimes travel in much larger player groups than in DDO, even though it happens maybe only once or twice per year during some really big events. One feature which I really wish Neverwinter and all other MMORPG games would use from BGTSCC is the acquisition of RP EXP. Whenever a player writes an elaborate sentence with fantasy theme that looks like role-playing in chat channel, there is a small chance that he or she gets some experience points for role-playing.

All in all, with DDO and NWN 1/NWN 2 still providing fierce competition, I am really not sure whether it is worth it to spend any money on Neverwinter. Last summer I bought a founder's pack for Mechwarrior Online without hesitation because that franchise was really dead to that point but D&D is thriving even without Neverwinter. It's really hard to decide without being able to try the game.

well I have the 200 bucks but I haven't seen enough of the game to really spend it.
Controls sound like MWOs and I've gotten use to those but easier then hotbars....nope.

I love the founders package and would buy the highest one but I need to see how the game plays. I learned my lesson with MWO where I was a legendary founder.
