Well it's not a race, it's a background, so maybe it's shown once you make a Drow. Or you could ask in the Beta forums I guess, assuming they exist.

The following is my own personal opinion formed through a little search, and might be a completely baseless conjecture drawn from misinformation on my part. It is in no ways meant to confirm or deny anything, so take it as you will...

AFAIK Menzoberranzan Renegades are Drows that live on the surface - not much actual difference in terms of characteristics, more so on their views and beliefs. Seeing as they hate worshipping Llolth enough to escape to the surface, general (OOC) consensus is that they reject the "evil" ways of their former brethren dwelling in Menzoberranzan, and as such generally not "evil" in a sense. Aside from who they worship, not much of a difference between the two, at least not enough to warrant a different race IMO.

Gameplay-mechanic wise, it seems like one of the selling points of Menzoberranzan Renegades is the racial ability, Faerie Fire - which is also one of the most common innate and natural abilities all Drows should possess, surface / renegade or otherwise. So, it might be just as muzrub333 said, a background thing - but seeing as how the description states that it is a whole -unique- race, brings 2 possibilities to mind, both of which I cannot confirm or disapprove of unless a beta player comes along to do so:

    1) The unique race are the Drows itself, unlikely in my opinion, or
    2) They have not implemented yet. I'm more in personal favor towards option 2, as by taking a quick peek in the FAQs (http://nw.perfectworld.com/about/faq#which) seems to suggest that they did not include the unique playable race of Menzoberranzan Renegades in the beta weekends.

Why not? Who can say the ways of the hidden exiles from Lloth?

This is purely from a categorization (and personal) standpoint, but the only difference (in my humble and not exactly expert opinion) between the Renegades and the native residents of Menzoberranzan are their way of life - be it worship, culture, beliefs and otherwise. They don't vary a whole lot in terms of physiology - however, other more notable Elves such as Sylvan or Eladrin are very much different.

Their basic structure / build are roughly the same in terms of weight and height, but features such as affinity to magic, color of skin / eyes / hair / etc, natural prowess or strengths that they are born with sets them apart from one another - the magic and sharp minds of the Eladrin, the keen senses, preference and expertise on matters of nature and such of the Sylvan Elves, and the long-life spans and dark magics / powers of Lolth of the Drows, each and all of them have rather significant differences as a race (disregarding their different psychologies and general train of thoughts, as that's where the Renegades are different from your average Drow).

As you can tell, all of these are (for the sake of simplification) "physical" differences - varying largely in and between the races. Of course, there are sub races and the like, but these are the predominant "branches", so to speak - the sub races all stemming from the same kind of pool of abilities, features and characteristics of the aforementioned branches, but with slight variances.

It seems a bit unfair for throwing culture, psychology and general mindset out of the window when breaking up different races, but to factor in all these would cause an incredibly large and rather unpractical list. It's a way to blanket a whole different lot of individuals as a race - an example would be that we are all Humans, despite the vast differences we always seem to find between ourselves and others.

This is only my own personal opinion, however, and I repeat, I am certainly no expert in matters of lore or D&D, though I always held a probing interest, or curiosity, towards them.

You might have noticed Drow are not a selectable race for this play-test. ;)

I have no idea why but without a doubt that's part of the reason you're not able to play as Drizzt Do'Urden.

The pack says " Unique Exclusive Race " that would to me and most people means a separate race to pick on the char screen, not a background? a race is a separate selection in all games, not a background story...

It... technically is a unique race, but not all together. Its like saying, "You can be a... Highland Human, with unique stats." You're still just a drow, but you're a 'different' drow... lame, I know. Cryptic likes money, what can I say.

Im also prepared to see everything for free being utter HAMSTER, while the 'why are you not buying this' stuff will be microtransactions. I had this discussion in the CO forums along time ago (when it first went f2p), and just thought they should switch the f - p for p2f (Pay To have Fun).

Well, when ya think about it, either way you're paying. Also, when the game is 3-4 months old, you'll probably stop spending money since you bought everything you wanted already. Its a 'pay alot now to pay alot less later' sorta thing. Im just happy the game started out f2p, instead of Champions. I cant play my main anymore, unless I sub to them (its a char I had since launch, that got changed to a gold char. So Cryptic has been holding my char for ransom, so to speak). At least this way, everything starts off on an equal footing.

hmm , it does say unique race now. Sure it used to say just racial, mind it is pretty much a different race in that i believe it has slightly different stats and racial abilities. Is it a unique race though as it is still drow? I think so as human are all human but there still have different races too. As i do not have access to beta, I take it from the other poster that this is just because you can not access drow and the "unique race" is a sub section of that.
I would still hardly say this is scamming.
