So, while I've been a long time PnP Roleplayer, one thing I've never actually done is a game set in the Forgotten Realms!
At the bequest of a friend, I've just started reading Salvatore's work. I started of course with Homeland and have made my way so far to The Legacy. However, while a fun read, I'd like to know a bit more about the Forgotten Realms setting beyond the Drizzt stories.
So, what are some good books to read? A list of things to read to catch up to Neverwinter Onlines timeline!

omg tons. Just search "Forgotten Realms" on Amazon. Forgotten Realms is by for the most lore of any fanstasy setting.. and most importantly, the framework is there to roll your own content.
There is also a campaign boxed set for the Forgotten Realms that has a ton of back lore to help you build your own campaigns... rich with maps and history.
I've been runninng a FR campaign once a week from my house for like 3 years now. We are getting ready to start up an old school 2nd edition campaign shortly.
Tons and tons of resources though. Check out WotC's website as well.
I know people who only stick to one setting - like some guys always stick to AD&D and greyhawk.
I on the contrary, also stick to one setting which is Forgotten Realms - however I sometimes double time it in Greyhawk too. Well, Vecna and Raven Queen are kind of enticing ...
Our actual DnD games have been rare. Systems like Palladium's Rifts, Savage Worlds, Shadowrun, Pathfinder and so on have been a preference for us. And our DnD games have either been something like Eberron or purely homebrew settings.
Now to get lost in the wiki, oh dear.

I really recommend the Neverwinter campaign setting published by Wizards for 4E. In addition to giving you a full run down of the city, its neighborhoods and personalities, it includes the big threats and bad guys menacing the city, many of whom have already appeared in gameplay videos.
Wiki has good info about 3e, but 4e and later info is not very refined - it may be wrong at many places. So read it with caution. (Came up in discussion a while ago).

I highly recommend the Forgotten Realms wiki at http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page. Its a lot more detailed than anything you'll find on these forums(which is probably mostly culled from there anyway.) I specifically recommend, http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Neverwinter and http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/New_Neverwinter

Does not compute.
