Is This Really Open World?

Every video I have seen has been

A class highlight

A dungeon delve ( instanced )

A games convention dungeon delve / story dungeon arc ( instanced )

Even city gameplay had just npcs.

Where is the OPEN world in this game?

I hope this is not like Guild Wars 1 , where the only players you see are in town hubs. Will there be open world hunting / farming and interacting with others or is this going to be a ( invite 4 friends / random strangers ) then jump into a zone by yourselves?
Blue, green, grey, white, or black; smooth, ruffled, or mountainous; that ocean is not silent.

I believe there are supposed to be large public wilderness instances, but this isn't primarily an open world game.

In some other videos on YouTube you can tell that it is definitely open world.

It's about 50/50 in the end.

Devs have already confirmed that open world will consist of large adventure zones with gates to intanced content. It will most likely be similar to SWTOR planets.

Out of curiosity, why would you want this? It's not like you're playing with the other people running around out there. I guess I don't understand the allure of being in an adventure area with other players who are not in your party.

For the sake of this question, I'm assuming this is not pertaining to PVP where it is obvious why you'd want other PC's there.

The best way I can think of to answer this is to give the most commonly accepted definitions of a few different terms.

Instanced - This is when the same area is used for different people. Creatures and monsters are unique to you and your party. As far as you can tell from an instanced area the only thing that exists is you and your party.

Persistent Zone - A map in which you can see players who are not a member of your party.

Open World - A game with no loading screens or transitions. When you walk from City A to City B you literally walk over every "inch" of land.

Now with those definitions I can tell you the game will be both persistent and instanced. Certain Dungeons and Quests will only be available to you and your party but there is a large amount of persistent zones as well in which you will see other players and opt to fight alongside them.
The game will not be Open World and Cryptic has never said it would be. The zones will be huge even compared to many zoned world games but it is not Open World.

Open World is not the same as Persistent. Skyrim, for instance, is an Open World Single Player (Instanced) game.

It's not a sandbox game if that is what you are wondering (my POV from the videos and articles I have seen/read).
There is a rumor floating around that I am working on a new foundry quest. It was started by me.

Personally, I am a huge fan of open world "sandbox" zones. It adds a sense of realism to the world you are playing in. Random encounters with not only monsters, but other adventurers is a natural occurrence while traveling down a road or path, or just simply out exploring. It is also a great way to meet new friends.

Even though you can level from 1 to 60 on player made content if you wish. (once its made)

Then when you reroll you can level by other player made content.

    sandbox enough?

You are not the only one. Clarification of what NWO is hopefully will come sometime in the next few weeks. To quote a talented swordsman about the use of the term "open world": "I do not think that word means what you think it means."

EQ 1&2 - Open world with instances.
WoW - Open world with instances.
GW1 - Open player lobbies with instances.
DDO - Open player lobbies with instances.
GW2 - Open world with instances.
CO - Open world with instances.
STO - Open player lobbies with instances.

    NWO - ???????

I would call this a non-seamless open world game. I would not limit open world games to all being seamless. For example EQ1 was an open world game in my opinion but it was not seamless in had zone transitions

From everything I have seen and heard so far by your definitions

NWO - Open world with instances

But I would take it one step further and say

NWO - Non-Seamless open world with instances

The last, real open world i remember is Ultima Online. Till Renaissance it was too the true sandbox, with pvp in the full map and full loot (the thing i really miss in games, but it's only a personal taste).

There is a difference between a seamless world and an open world. Take the comparison between WoW and GW2. In WoW you can literally walk across an entire continent and through several different large zones w/o ever seeing a loading screen. The only time you would see a loading screen in WoW is when you enter an instance within a zone, que for an instance (dungeon or PvP) or switch continents. So WoW would seem to me to be more of a seamless world. Where as in GW2 you could still walk across an entire continent, but every zone had a loading screen. That seems to me more like an open world. I'm honestly not sure what the pure definitions are. That is just my opinion.

Please read my FAQ second posting. It *IS* both. PvP is not open world.

Other combat is. Including non combat areas.

I can't detail it but I can confirm it is both. Think doing missions in said zones and in instanced areas.

    ^What he said.

As long as your definition of Open World doesn't include "seemeless" the game is very much both.
DDO is instanced only outside of safe zones. Neverwinter has numerous persistent zones in which you can fight monsters alongside random players.

There was some onstage interview i watched on youtube cant find it anymore but the interviewer asked the question where is all the players, and he mentioned when the game is launched you will be able to see lots of other players around you questing, so basically they arent showing open world gameplay because their is not enough players to showcase it off properly

Correct. I can personally vouch seeing other players questing next to each other in open world. Even non teamed players saving other players' butts with no alignment enforced :)
