Hey, not sure if there's any word on this yet, but thought I'd ask: Will our character names be allowed two words or just one?
For instance, if I am allowed just one word, I could be Elfar, and my alts might be variations on Elfar, like Elfair, Elfaire, or Elfaer.
BUT, if I am allowed two words, I could be Hoth Elfar, Hoth Morgon, Hoth Daen, and Hoth Bjorn. Or I could have different first names for my chars but the same last name, and call them "siblings." Jer Elfar, Aeor Elfar, and Mar Elfar, for instance.
It would just make it easier to be recognized in the game across characters.
It's a small detail, and not a game breaker, but I'm hoping that I can use two words in my character names. What about you? Does it make a difference to you?
"Truth is absolute, so if you truly seek it, you can find only one answer."
STO lets you have a First and Last name...I doubt Neverwinter will be different, also don't worry about someone having your name...cryptic has always allowed multiple names that are the same.

Hey, that's great. But wait, multiple characters can have the same name? So every one of my chars could be Elfar Mar? Or there could be other players with Elfar Mar as there char names?
Be a little confusing, wouldn't it? I mean, I understand having the same names for Chars all on one account, but not sure I like the idea of impersonation...

From what I understand you cannot have 2 characters with the same name, but someone else can have a character with the same name because his username is different.
While I believe you may only have one character with the same name other people have have characters with that name. Here some examples, for simplicity sakes I'll use Drizzt Do'Urden.
Drizzt Do'Urden@ambisinisterr would be my character's full name as Drizzt Do'Urden.
Drizzt Do'Urden@meldroth would be yours.
When you are running around the @handle will be hidden but easily accessed if a player wanted to do anything like adding a friend or verifying which Drizzt Do'Urden is which.

That's really clever. I like that a lot.
So in-game I'd be Roth Meldroth@meldroth and Roth Doriath@meldroth. Cool.
STO must have a bazillion Spock@***** characters running around...
"Truth is absolute, so if you truly seek it, you can find only one answer."
Hmm, I like the idea of getting any name that I want without spending half an hour trying to, but I am not sure how I feel about my name not being unique...
Still, I guess this is like real life, so that is kinda cool.
And I have actually run into someone with the exact same name as the character I was logged into but with a number behind it. Awkwarrrrrd.

I like this Idea. There's a good chance of seeing someone with the same first name but the likelihood someone has the same first and last name seems very low, unless you're a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins or something unimaginative like that.

Like it, not that anyone will ever pick my names though. I've used the same names for many years now in gaming.

Well, not like you think. Spock and a whole mess of other names constitute a list of invalid choices. There are obvious ones like swear words, but others, like Spock, Kirk, Worf, etc. are reserved so that copyrights can be respected so far as I can tell. Of course that doesn't stop people from getting creative with their spelling variations to get past that. It's not comprehensive, though. I want to say I've seen some Picards around (I'm possibly misremembering that). Either way, I expect there will be something similar in NW.
Interestingly enough, I've seen several captains named Leroy Jethro Gibbs. I'm sure they get +3 to head slaps.

Hahaha!
Good story Aavarius! I didn't know there were that many Gibbs running around in STO.
Not 100% positive but I believe Cryptic did say they wouldn't be implementing any reserved names (sadly) to Neverwinter. I would really prefer to not see a thousand Drizzt Do'Urden's but at least we'll be given complete freedom and won't have to worry about too many issues in character creation.
Plus people like me suck at making names. Even when I am creating my own they tend to evolve and sound similiar like the thirteen dwarves: Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bompher, Nori, Ori, Dori, Gloin, Oin, Kili, Fili and Thorin. As creative as I can be I suck with names.
Frankly the only reason I strive to make my own unique names is because I am cursed with one of the most common names (frankly the second most common IMO despite what survey's and census records show) and I refuse to have names like everybody else.
Off Topic: If any of you name your kids John, Michael, Chris[add suffix], David, Thomas or William I will personally beat you over the head. When you grow up with 8/50 people that have the same name on a high school bus at the same time you have every right to say people need to cut the **** and scold anybody who makes their kids deal with that life-long annoyance.

STO & CO use NAME@ForumName.
So your characters would be Elfar@meldroth, Aeor Elfar@meldroth etc.
Mail sent to any of your characters is seen as @meldroth so any character on your account can pick up mail/items no matter who it was sent too.

Just do it like real life - take a name nobody has heard before to be unique.
Like you can google search and see if "Tookieelaja Wajanigu" is taken and see...
Listening to the reps talk at Gencon about how much time they spent programming the language filter to reject even the most obscure spelling of the known Realms characters, I just don't think it's going to be a issue...he said they had tons of variants from CO and STO that they just copied over and they added more down to spelling the names backwards.

I like the way Cryptic does the naming, that's much better than slapping an "x" or two at the end of a name. (common in EQ/EQ2 due to server merges)
I can see some fun being had by role playing a Doppleganger; find someone to impersonate, create a character of the same race/sex/class, use the same name, then just try to have the same armor/appearance items. You could just randomly show up at his/her guild events. Creepy, but could be good for some laughs.

I really like this way of naming characters. And I could care less if there are 1,000's of toons running around with the same name, heck, such is life! Where it becomes awkward is when first & last names are the same, and you are trying to pull together a group.
Think about it... You are stuck for time (not much play time available) and you are trying to put together a PUG. You'll basically take anybody who will answer the call... 5 man parties, so you need 4 other players... You're name is Bob... and the only other people around that can group up at your level? All named Bob. (sigh). Weird!
Otherwise, I live the @accountname method!
Yay!! This sounds great!!
Hate sitting there having created that character thinking of a surden name to represent his/hers personality, and then FAIL!! when you enter name and it's taken...
Yeah I find this feature amazing. I was soooo taken away by this when I first found out. I went out and ordered a mighyt big ale and toasted Zelubar for the infor!!!
TO ZELUBAR I SAID.... AHH as I sat at the bar ... Bwhahahahaha! I think it was Zelubar...or maybe it was Candybar that told me.. hmmm I might have had to many pints.

How is chat handled in this regard? When you type something in chat is it your character name or your @Handle that shows up?
You can have multiple words separated by spaces, too. As many as you like, within the 20-character limit. You could name your character I Am Not An Ape Man, if you wanted to.
So in-game I'd be Roth Meldroth@meldroth and Roth Doriath@meldroth. Cool.
STO must have a bazillion Spock@***** characters running around...
Here's the fun part, you can have more than one character with the same name in different Cryptic games and the chat systems does pass back and forth..
I could, for example have ..
Joe Normal@somedumbguy as a Superhero in CO
Joe Normal@somedumbguy as Captain in STO
and
Joe Normal@somedumbguy as a Adventurer in NW
And talk in channels from one game to another. I know it works, I've talked to my SG in Co via their OOC channel we have while I was in STO admiring a game of Cryptic's that still has Dev staff after NW's pillaging ^_-
