Well I just stopped from a ruined night of gameplay. I downloaded and installed RaiderZ and attempted to play the beta that started today. And wasnt able to continue due to gameguard.
Is this the norm for Perfectworld? Is it the norm for Cryptic? I certainly hope not. I implore you Devs, do not use that piece of <font color="orange">HAMSTER</font> program. It is uncompatible with my system, it is technically a virus (look it up), and people can still hack the games with Gamegaurd. So it doesnt seem to be the type of program a reputable company would use. I really want to play Neverwinter Online, but if this program or any program like it is used for the game, then you have lost a potential customer. RaiderZ already has lost me, it took me about 3 hours to figure out how to disinfect my system and remove the malware.
I too would preffer not to have the malicious rootkit known as gameguard infecting my system.
however given the recent hacking of blizzards battle.net and the general pervasiveness of cheating commonly seen in MMOs, some thought must be given to both account security and game security.
just...please...not gameguard, find something that actualy works instead....something that doesnt antagonise potential customers.
Agreed. This will likely be a dealbreaker for me with RaiderZ. There are really very few things that will drive me from a game and that is one of them.
Please, for the love of all that is good don't use this.
here is an example of what can happen when a company (in this case Sony) introduces rootkits onto victims...i mean customers...systems.
hopefully this is taken under consideration when deciding whether to use gameguard or not.

Yeah, that would totally suck. There are much better ways to do hacking/account protection. (I don't know what those are, but considering that I haven't played an MMO with gameguard on it in the last few years...)
First, it's not there to protect just account security. Cryptic has an Account Guard system that is intended to make logging in more secure (of course, this doesn't protect in "PEBKAC" issues! Don't share your account info, yo). It's there to keep people from inserting code, pulling code, and generally hacking files to alter things. If any of you were around for Blacklights Betas, that's what people were doing. It does provide protection against keyloggers, but that's not the main point for it.
Rootkits are a bit scary- messing around with root access can be a bit dodgy if you don't know what you're doing (hence why Windows almost completely denies root access). BUT rootkits are not inherently evil (unlike internet explorer). I haven't heard anything horrible about gameguard specifically, but if people can point to specific examples I'd love to read it (I'm learning more about this now, as a hobby).
Other games have things that are similar to gameguard- Many of the PWE games use punkbuster, and even WoW has one called Warden. Seems gameguard is popular with MMOs from Korea.
BUT
Even if you don't want to listen to my reasonings, I don't think this is something that will come with Neverwinter. None of PWEs other games have this, nor do any of the cryptic developed games. I think this might have been something that was put in by Maiet.

Lets look at what gameguard is intended to do.
