How to use threat as a tank.

jana#2651 jana Member Posts: 686 Arc User
I just started playing as a tank for maybe 4 months with a secondary character. She is a Fighter-Paladin female elf. I have everything marked under powers that seem what a tank would need. She is 66,000 IL with fair stats. How do I generate threat? I was playing with her in the infernal citadel the other day and I thought I was doing a pretty good job when they just kicked me out. Any advice?

You use power to gain threat. Read the tooltip of the powers. That tells you what gain threat. You wear equipment that gains threat.

You don't 'use' it. It is not something you can 'use'. You need to maintain it so that the tank will attract enemies from attacking your party to attacking you. The idea is to keep other dps away from harm so that they can kill enemies while the enemies pay their attention to you. You stay in front of (say) the boss and screaming to the boss 'hit me, hit me' while the others stab it from its back end.

Not only that, increase your power as possible and deal damage, tanks low damage but generate a lot of agro with that damage.

Tank needs to deal "enough" damage. Unless that power generates extra threat, it is easy for the DPS or even healer to take over the aggro.

Of course when more damage more agro. Nice tank job is when others agro bar is in blue.

I would like to add here that even when the tank produces enough threat the DPS players must be aware that they can get full aggro in a blink of an eye by certain Boss mechanics (like Tankbuster as an example) because Tanks aggro will be dropping significantly by those kind of mechanics.
Keep in mind that dungeon runs are a group effort and not a race to get on top of the Epeen list

And others attach dps without tank lose aggro. But thats not usual aggro mechanics.

As a healer, I wish tanks had better tools for AoE threat. Maybe they do and I just happen to encounter tanks that don't use it well, IDK. Often on boss fights with adds, my HoT will tick just as adds spawn, so they swarm me. And as a sidenote for DPS: stopping your damage on the boss to quickly kill the adds is tremendously helpful. I cannot heal while dodging.

Don't forget the importance of items and abilitys that increase "threat". without them it is particularly easy for rouges and other high dps to overtake you, look at the agro bar and if it changes from red to green or yellow you have lost agro.

A good tank knows how to position, personally I always face the group, especially the healer because adds will always go to Healer first..
With good positioning It's easy to intervene the adds before they reach the Healer
note. DPS must be aware of the fact that adds goes straight to healer, so they should drop their blindfolds and help the Healer..

I am advertizing for a long time now by Devs to make the nameplate acting as that tiny button (aggro meter).. Thusfar, no luck or reaction

Thank you all for your replies, there all good information. I am clearer now about attracting threat, I have a fightersun elf) who is now a justicar Paladin, I know she takes damage way better now. I have that ring on my encounter powers that turns yellow and I am like frozen, but people can run into it for a short time and attack without taking damage, but only once in awhile does anyone use. I hate to ask though, where is the aggrometer?

The threat meter is the small bar next to the Shield symbol. I move the mouse cursor to it and the tooltip says "No enemy is threatening you".
