Chult Quest: A Little Research (ZERO Monsters to Hunt)

peppa#4404 peppa Member Posts: 49 Arc User
Part of my weekly tasks from Sybella this week is to do 5 quests from the Jungle of Chult campaign. For one thing opening the campaign is confusing as ever. I only have the first quest of the campaign completed but I don't have enough of the required currency to open any of the other tasks in the campaign page so that had me lost and (still) confused as to how I'm even supposed to start any of the quests since I can't do anything with the campaign and there's no instructions or indication anywhere at all as to what I'm supposed to do to get the currency to open them.

I figured out I can go to the Port town in Chult and get quests from the NPC's there. One of the quests I have is titled "A Little Research". The only thing the right side page of the Quest Journal says as far as instructions is "Defeat Rare Creatures". It doesn't say where, how, when, who, what, or even how to identify which of the strange creatures everywhere in the game are 'rare'. Every creature in the game is 'rare' to me (lol)! There's no quest path, no arrows, no pins or special icons on any of the maps. Nothing.

I went to Sosh-something River, the only other zone on the Chult map for me, and roamed every inch of that map for about 2 hours. Again there's no quest path, no pins on the map, no arrows or anything, no instruction anywhere in any of the info I can find in the game for this quest (which is very little), none of the monsters I've seen on that map in 2 hours (plus another hour a seasonsed player ran around the map with me trying to show me how to complete the quest that ended up being baffled as well). There's nothing at all anywhere that says "This is the one! Kill it!".

I have 2 Rotten Ogre's Femurs in my inventory that the seasoned player shared *should* complete the quest but again there's no quest path, no instruction, no nothing anywhere telling me where to turn them in. I found The Hunter's Square in the Port town of Chult and spoke to every NPC going through all of their dialogs and still...nothing. Only one of the NPC's accepts the femurs I have but in order to purchase a lure from that NPC I also need some kind of heart from some other animal - that's no where in the Sosher(? can't remember the name) River zone.

I found a reddit post from 8 years ago that had a similar issue with this quest. Their issue was they killed the monsters with a party of people. The workaround for them was mailing the tropy's to them selves. I tried that and the game won't allow me to attach the femur's to mail at all.

The femurs I have came from a few weeks ago when the Jungle of Chult quests were 2x currency. I ran through some of them partially but then abandoned them and got them off my quest journal because I wasn't really seeing 2x of anything.

What do I have to do to complete the "A Little Research" quest?
Where are the monsters we're supposed to kill to get the trophy's to buy the lures with supposed to be at?

The Rare Creature can be found in Soshenstar River and Lost city of Omu. They are "everywhere". They have a special symbol on top of their head. So, basically, walk around and search for them.

There's no "rare" monsters on the map, no special icons, no quest path, no special markings whatsoever on the map or any of the monsters that are there.

I'm not just blind or not seeing it. They're not there. As I shared above another player ran around with me and didn't see any. Twice. Once grouped together, once just following each other without being grouped in a party.

Is there a way I can reset the quest somehow? I've abandoned it and restarted it. That didn't do it either, still no monsters with the "hunt" icon over them anywhere.

There are. River is where I found the easy one to kill. They are not on the map. They are like a regular monster but an icon on their head beside their name. You need to look for them. Killing one is part of weekly quest. Usually, there are a bunch in the camp area.

Just for the heck of it, I went to River. In the camp Vengence area, I see 3 "Undead Rotting Ogre" with a special icon as usual.

Some groups of monsters can be rare, but not all the time. If the normal monsters are there you have to kill them, and then when it appears again it might be the rare variant. There are seven rare types in Soshenstar and another seven in Omu. So it is possible that no rare ones were there, but usually some are.

The hunt system that launched with Chult and exists in later mods randomly populates rare variants of critters in specific places on the map. Some of them have roam paths and some are stationary. These special variants have special indicators. They are 5 stars, usually have a yelloeing poster icon next to ther names and often have a unique name, for example Sir Galahad instrad of Narzugon.

If I recall correctly, in some zones, killing the normal type of a monster repeatedly over several minutes will trigger the rare variants to appear faster/more often. They will sometimes drop trophies with which you complete quests and build lures. Rng is...pretty low as you progress higher in the hunt system.

Sidebar... some hunts (triggered by lures) are broken and may glitch out on you

I finally found them. They truly were not spawning any of the other times I was there.
I mean no offense, I believe it's that fellow vetran players in some way forget that new players don't know the lingo and probably don't know landmarks on the map they're asking about. Some of the help some people try to provide sometimes lacks necessary info. A kind reminder that when you're trying to help someone it's important to be specific and detailed.

"near the camp". What camp? There's 2 or 3 NPC camp sites there are tasks at on the Soshenstar River map and there's a Campsite or 2 on that map too (invoking zones).

For other people struggling with these quests the same way I was that finds this thread:

    1. We have to get the Soshenstar and Chalt quests from the NPC in Port Nyanzura. This NPC is in the temple at the opposite end of the map we spawn in to when we go to Port town/area. He's not on a throne but if there were a throne in that room/area that's where he is, in the middle opposite the entrance to that room/temple/area (whatever you prefer to call it).

    2. We then get a quest path that leads us to the gate to Soshenstar River. Just before we get to the gate there's an entrance to a room the left in the wall (Hunter's Square on the map list) if you're headed toward the gate. If you go straight through that entrance you'll run in to the NPC that gives the "A Little Research" quest. You can optionally go to him first after you spawn in to the Port town, the room is the first door on the right side when we spawn in.

    3. When we get to Soshenstar River map we start in the east side of the map. The Rotten Ogre's that drop their femur bone when we kill them is behind The Vengence Camp which is the Fort area on the West edge of the map, opposite of where we spawn in the map. When you reach the entrance to the Vengence Camp go around the walls of it to the left around the back of it. There should be 4 to 6 Rotten Ogre's there. Keep killing them and collecting Rotten Ogre's Femur bone until the quest completes.

If you check all the dialogs to the NPC's in the Hunter's Square that sell Lure's the one that accepts Ogre Femu's as currency also requires a Tyranosaur Fang (also randomly found in Shoshenstar River) to purchase a Lure. We don't need that. I only needed 3 Ogre Femur's and the quest completed. We don't need to get a Lure and do any of that.

Have you talked to Prince O'tamu to get quests from him?

The hunt system and related quests are the one tier of the campaign window - you can progress it somewhat after you have done the main questline, or alongside the others (the main questline will give you access to more weekly quest to farm the weekly currency needed faster, so people generally recommend doing the "story" tier of the campaign first (middle tier on the campaign window), then boons or hunts) BUT you do not NEED to do hunts if you do not want to / if you do not want any associated gear pieces.
Your quest is more or less a "intro" quest and works if you do drop any trophy from a marked mob in Soshenstar, yes. Actively killing several packs of normal mobs to spawn them is the best way now - and not all marked mobs have to drop a trophy.
The Tyr. Fang is a drop from the marked rex - iirc there are 3 spawns for rex in Soshenstar, and repeatedly killing Rex will eventually spawn a marked rex that drops the fang - 100% of the time. The fang is needed for ALL Tier 1 Hunts in Soshenstar.

The hunt marks are a step above the average critter of their type. It may involve killing mobs and waiting for a spawn. Except for the ogres. They pop up like fungus.
