Aggro Against the Sisters of Ravenloft

thomasisalonethomasisalone Member Posts: 78 Arc User
This is a well known issue, but I haven't seen it posted here so I'm making a report. This applies to all 3 sisters, however the first one you fight is most likely to experience this bug than the other two, and it is least consequential with the third sister.

Aggro against the Sisters of Ravenloft is completely broken. Even if a tank has completely red aggro bar, and the other players have only a slither of green in their bars, the "living" sister can just lose interest in the tank entirely and start following around a random player. It's more likely that they'll follow the person who has the book, but it can still be anyone but the tank - it can start happening before the book is even available to use. Hard taunts (e.g. Enforced Threat on the fighter) and threat increasing powers do not make a difference and will not cause the sister to start following the tank.

It's difficult to give exact instructions on how to recreate the issue as it's seemingly at random, so just going into a CR and playing the Sister fight is the best way to reproduce it. Nonetheless, these seem to be common triggers for failing the fight:

- Being too far away from a sister can cause them to lose interest in the tank, but not on DPS. They'll happily teleport to the DPS's, but not to tanks
- Line of Sight seems to be a problem. There's a risk that if a dps walks between her and the tank (e.g. your moving a sister) that she'll follow that dps around. If the tank walks between her and the dps she doesn't care.
- Usually, the dps that she follows is the one with the book, but not always. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all, sometimes she'll teleport to the literally other side of the map to get to the book user.
- It's normally a dps that she follows, not the healer. It can be healer, but it's not common.
- Tanks taking the book does not help them with aggro, even though it makes dps's more interesting to the living sister.

I don't know how aggro is represented in your code, but it's almost as if there's a minus sign so that they follow the opposite aggro order. This would track with why they tend to follow the person with the book, as their threat is essentially becoming 0 to the living sister as they're doing no (apparent) damage to her. Tanks, however, generate threat with many of their actions so are almost never bottom of the threat list.

Please may this be prioritized for being fixed. CR is an old dungeon, but it is on the RADQ list and it is a fairly common one to appear. It's an amazing dungeon, but the first boss fight is almost unplayable in its current state. Unless your with a very high dps group it can take an extremely long time to win, if you can even get through it.

I have a couple of tips on how to work around this bug if it's happening with your group:

    - If you're targeted and have the book, drop the book. This fight needs the ghosts and the living sister separated in order to progress, and this is not possible while you have the book.
    - Stand directly behind the tank, and don't move. The sister attacks are actually ranged (not sure if this is intentional), but can be intercepted by the tank if they stand between you and the sisters and are in melee range. You need to stand right in their back though, otherwise they might teleport behind you, or between you and the tank. If that does happen, tank should just move between the target and the sister.
    - The only exception is the "Prepare to the join the ranks of the undead" attack. There's text that appears above their head when they're going to do it, but you can also see tell when it will happen by a debuff on your bar stacking up to 10. If the tank has stood between the target and the sister and also has 10 stacks, it should just target them. But, the attack can be dodged – if you’re fighter/paladin, just put your shield up and it will absorb the attack (it does tiny damage if it hits a shield but one shots otherwise). Other classes, you need to wait for the sister to jump and crouch in the air. At that point, use your shift ability to get behind her and you will avoid the attack. It it quite tricky to pull off though, so be prepared to be killed.

Note that if the sister does target then kill you, sadly you’re not guaranteed to lose aggro. As soon as you’re picked up, she’ll come straight for you, if she ever lost interest in your downed body.
