Tried it through arc and steam, same problem. No idea what's going on. Uninstalled and re-installed. Anyone else?

    Try running:

    tracert crypticstudios.com

to see if you can reach it. It can be a routing problem or a DNS name resolve problem.

    e.g.

    9 25 ms 25 ms 23 ms ae13.er3.lga5.us.zip.zayo.com [64.125.27.45]

So I worked out that the google links weren't working neither typing it in but typing www. into the address bar first would connect me! Weird.

HOWEVER the cryptic launcher autoupdate still fails to connect whenever i try to start the game, even running as admin, before eventually telling me theres a connection problem, and that it's unable to establish a connection to the patch server. Anybody got any ideas?!

That means somewhere between you and Cryptic has a routing or connection issue. i.e. transtelecom, probably a main gateway between Germany and North America.

Or, may be you have a DNS issue.

    patchserver.crypticstudios.com [83.222.105.238]

That IP address appears to be wrong. i.e. your DNS server gives you wrong IP information.
    It should be 208.95.184.200.

Go to some DNS lookup site to check it out.
    I tried: https://mxtoolbox.com/DNSLookup.aspx

Try change your DNS server to 8.8.8.8 (Google's) to see if it does better.

I used reverse look up to check what 83.222.105.238 is. It is pointing to some IP in Russia (totally unrelated to Cryptic).
I wonder if your computer is compromised.

Plasticbat mentioned a DNS issue. Beginning roots of MMORPG gaming, setting DNS helps a bunch!

DNS stands for Domain Name System. This system is arguably one of the most important aspects of the Internet. DNS ensures the Internet is not only user-friendly but also works smoothly, loading the content users ask for quickly and efficiently.

    Use your internet provider DNS.

If use digital phone line? Use an ethernet cable.

Just Google how to set DNS. It's that easy.

If you still have issues? Reset the cable modem (paperclip), hold the button down until all lights are off. Let it cycle. Then turn off the router for 10 seconds (count slow). DON'T reset the router. A power surge protector will work for turning the router off; keeping the memory.
